In terms of actually calling a glass half ____. I usually say 'half and half'. Or in french, half of it has been drunken. In terms of being a cynic or optimist, I don't know. Depends, I like to try and pretend to be in between but I know that doesn't work half the time. When I'm sad, I'll be extremely cynical, if I'm happy I'll be more optimistic. Although I like to try and be as objective as possible.
It's a matter of context. If the glass is in the midst of the process of being drained, it is half empty. If it is being filled, it is half full. That said, this isn't exactly something to debate about.
Depends on my mood, if I'm feeling pesimistic, then half empty. ... So, basically, I always use half empty.
Half empty. But it doesn't matter either way, it's half one way or another, not any more and not any less.
It kinda confuses as full means to the limit (eXtreme!) so half of the limit would be ??? and empty means nothing. Half of emptiness is also ???. That is my point of view. So I just use "half"
"There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass! Who's been pinching my beer? " -- Terry Pratchett, The Truth
And then, of course, you have those people who not only have a larger glass but can afford to have people discreetly topping it up.
You show me half of something, and I'd say it's half. Here's half a coke, here's half a dollar (or 50 cents) and here is half a tank of fuel. None of this half full/half empty crap.
