Good internet plans?

Okay, at the moment I have a really crappy internet plan, 30 bucks a month, at about 5kb download speeds :-\ I am trying to convince my Mum to change plans to something around the same price but a lot better, I have a feeling that she would change, but we don't have a phone line. I connect to the internet by plugging in this adapter thing into the side of my laptop (I'm not sure what it's called).
Anyways, I was just wondering if any of you knew of any decent plans for not much more then $30 and don't require a phone line. Also, the main thing i want is to not go down to 2-5kb per second after I've used all of my downloads. I also live in Western Australia, if that helps.

What you have is mobile broadband, it operates off the mobile phone networks. It is much slower than standard broadband in virtually all cases (5KB/s is pretty good for GPRS, UMTS will get up to about 40KB/s and HSDPA can theoretically reach 750KB/s (never seen a company offering more than 360KB/s though). Which one you can get depends on the coverage and the provider) Mobile broadband is often a lot more expensive than landline broadband, and has much lower usage allowances. If you are technically able to get landline broadband (I.e you live less than 6 miles from the nearest telephone exchange), then I strongly suggest you consider it.

Are you sure it's mobile broadband? It's called Ocean Broadband, if that helps. What do you mean by nearest telephone exchange?

mobile broadband is quite simply broadband that operates over the mobile phone/cellphone networks, as opposed to landlines. A telephone exchange is where your landline ends up, i.e the other end of the wire. It will be a building owned by the telecoms company where a lot of phone lines from your area meet, to be connected to the national telecoms network. The nearest one is the one your landline (if you get one installed) is most likely to connect to, but not in all cases so it would be worth enquiring of the telecoms company which exchange you would be connected to and how far away from your address it is (you dont usually get a choice which one).

Oh I see now, sort of. Soo, I don't really have much of a choice but install a landline?

its the better option if you're within range to have landline broadband.

I have that-using it during peak times (say after school/after 5pm) means you be getting it SLOWER than slow-though I get 10kbs off mine, it's unstable and cuts out when I need it the most during those times :(

I use mine at these times to get the most speed...

11pm-5pm -full speed depnding on area

5pm-11pm-minimal speed and or connection rating :(

If you could get braodband internet (cable) as it doesn't require wireless siginals (which are unstable to be honest) but will require a cable to put put in-and if you had a brick house like mine you'd need to punch a hole thru it first-good thing is some companies can throw in a phone as well with that cable...

    I think...

I don't like my net, rather leech my mother's dsl-but for some reason 8GB on my wireless broadband last longer than 20GB on that thing-stupid optus!!!

So I'm stuck on crap speeds-like you dude :(

Wait, I think the cable thing is what I already have. Well the adapter thing plugged into the side of my laptop, is what connects me to the internet, it looks a cable too, well its a really long bunch of cords, not sure where it leads to. I also have a modem on the roof.
    Hmm this is confusing me.
