i'm planning on purchasing a Wii, used, from a retailer (private owned) near my location, and am wondering what i should be looking for...i know i want it to be under the 4.3U firmware, should i ask for lower? and also, how can i know if it will read DVD-R's without specifically asking that? should i be looking for a specific model number? because i'm planning to soft-mod it, and i don't plan on having it connected to the internet (unless necessary to soft-mod...)...so if anyone can guide me on what to ask for (model number, or similar, maybe a range of things...) i will be grateful.

    thanks in advance,
    Ryan.

if you can actually get a hold of the console and read the serial number: LU7306 and above cannot play DVD-R as for the firmware being on 4.3 is slim but possible, but if I am not mistaken there is a new bannerbomb that installs HBC on 4.3

Damn where is ace when you need him...

okay, so i just went to the shop, he doesn't have a serial number under that. :'( .... is there any other way to play games/ISOS other than a DVD-R?

but he has firmware all the way down to 4.1.....

USB Loading is the only way you can play any kind of backups.
You can use a flashdrive or a large harddrive. I use a Western Digital My Passport 320GB harddrive even though I can read DVD-Rs. I use the harddrive because it's faster loading times and it saves the disc drive and prolongs the life of the console in all. :) Plus reading DVD-Rs strains the laser.

You can download ISOs and you can burn them to DVD still, but you won't be able to dump them to using your Wii, you'll have to transfer it to your harddrive/flashdrive via computer. You can rip retail discs though on your Wii to USB. :)

    For games google wiiso.
They have wad files as well.
Make sure to get the Wiiscrubbed games. They have the udpates "scrubbed" out.

And if it does have 4.3, don't fret, you just need the real Brawl game or the first Lego Indiana Jones game to hack your Wii.

I too am able to play DVD-R on my Wii, but I prefer to play off a usb HDD.

The plus side is being able to rip games, but this console your looking at isn't going to allow you to do that, but you can still add games to the HDD using downloaded (wiiscrubbed) games and using a program on your PC called WBFS Manager (unless something better has been released) also installing Priiloader will block updates as well.

Softmodding the Wii is actually one of the easier mods that I have attempted and with aces help made it better. Unlike a certain sony handheld that I am pissed off with at this time...

i'm not willing to buy any games, so 4.3U is outta the question.... and does it have a USB port?!?! i got a WD passport 500GB.... and do all games have update?!?! because i'm using torrents to download....and what is the use of a WAD file? also, what are the chances of bricking?!?!

i've never modded anything, so this is new to me! WISH ME LUCK!

Yes they have 2 USB ports. Updates being on every game I am not sure of, purpose of WAD files is to be able to inject files used for modding and also you can get the Virtual Console and Wiiware games wads and play them on the channels and finally yes there is always a risk of bricking.

Read Aces guide and don't just skim over it actually read everything and once done read it again then take your time and go for it. If you screw it up just blast aces PM or post here he knows his stuff and pulled me out of a few jams.

is there any way to "unbrick"?!?!?!?!?!

Read aces guide http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=35411 and there is a link in Grey that states "Please read before attempting to mod your wii" it as all the info you need and answers to other questions you may have.

at first I was going to say not that I am aware of and I doubled checked and there is info on how to protect you from a brick and how to recover.

So like I have stated read, read, read and read everything all the links and whatever else. Also if your not comfortable doing it I recommend not doing it, but if you can follow instructions you shouldn't have much problems its actually easier than it looks once you get going with it and mod a couple.

okay, i read everything, and half the terms confused the shit outta me. :'( PMed ACE.....hoping he'll explain the terms...like WAD, IOSand that kinds of stuff, total NUB here...but will read that...didn't realize it was a link...i also read the 4.2 guide. :)

I was the same way on my first attempt took me a few days to finally get the nerve up to attempt it and got the major parts down, but I couldn't play gamecube games anymore and bunt discs wouldn't work either, so as time went on better programs came out and with aces help I have it doing just about everything other than cooking me breakfast.

In reality things were more confusing back then (about a year ago) as some programs were not available I was having to download tons of things and took hours and now its gotten simple as I done a friends in less than 30mins (a bit longer if you count putting games on his HDD)

well...i know ace lives about 2-3 hours away from me....*starts to think of inviting him over...* wonder how i can get him to mod my wii without my dad finding out.....

Well, the easiest way will be to not let your Dad play the Wii, and then hope he isn't home when you mod it. Otherwise there isn't truly a simple way, as he may then be wondering why you need the external hard drive plugged into your Wii all the time.

he just doesn't like letting people he don't know in...he knows i'm gonna mod it, he just doesn't know i want ace to do it. ::) my dad works 8-5 AM-PM....so there's a big chance right there........i PMed ace, to see if he will (he's not on ATM.....) my dad doesn't play games, he can't even figure out how to turn on my computer. LOL!

Well then, that should be relatively simple. Here's to hoping Ace is willing to make the journey to help you out. Otherwise you will be stuck with words. :p

I don't have that kinda money to drive all the way to your place catz. :p
I pirate because I have little right now and my job only pays about $116 a week and I get payed every 2...so yeah. :p

Another option is mailing me the Wii.
For a full mod, it would take around 1-2 hours.

I'll make some terms for new people into the scene. A dictionary of Wii terms.
