I am planning to get a new PS3 by the end of November. I have a few questions about it. First off, the only internet I can get at my home is dial up (crappy) or wireless (unreliable and expensive) so I will likely NOT have internet connected to my PS3. I would like a few good game suggestions, with the following criteria: Good single player campaign, Local Multiplayer support (I have a little brother and a cousin who lives nearby.) and a strong replay value. I'm thinking the first games I get will likely be Borderlands and Final Fantasy XIII, I would like reccomendations for a solid RPG. I'm likely to get the new assassin's creed when it comes out, so that's my general Genre of choice, if that helps.

    How is the PS2 / PS1 support?
Is there any way to download downloadable content and then transfer it to the PS3?

and on the shady side of things, is there any way to mod it so that I can play roms. Not specifically ps3 roms, as there are likely few of those out, but Maybe older generation systems (PS1, Gamecube, etc..) (I don't like modchips, they tend to cause problems for me)

I've also heard that you can install Linux on it, what exactly does that entail as far as gaming goes?

thanks in advance, and serious replies only. I'm doing a little homework before I spend money, so I appreciate any help.

PS3 cannot be modded. It can run linux, but that locks out the graphics chip so the linux install cannot be used for gaming.

I believe all PS3s can play PS1 games, but none of the newly produced ones can play PS2 games. (the older 60GB models can). it supports USB thumb drives for pictures and stuff, and I believe it is also possible to update the system using a thumb drive.

You can install Linux on the PS3. But when running the Linux OS you cannot play games. You have to reboot into the XMB in order to play games. Sony did this to put a road block on a potential loophole in the anti-piracy, and it seems to have worked so far :)

Personally I don't see any reason why you'd want to run Linux, other than "Hey, I can run Linux!". Turning your PS3 into a word processor and internet browser/email box seems like a waste.

As for RPG suggestions I would say Dragon Age Origins, Demon's Souls, also White Knight Chonicles looks promising, but it will not be released here (US) until Feb.

thanks guys. I wasn't planning on installing linux, I was just wondering if it would allow you to play roms from that operating system. Since It doesn't, I won't worry about it.

What about downloading content from a website to a USB drive and then transferring it to the PS3. I'm wondering how i'll get downloadable content or if I even can. thanks for the PS1 info, and Is it possible to even get the old PS3, so I can play my PS2 collection? I have a ridiculous amount of PS2 games, and I'd like to carry those over. Any ideas?

Though to be honest, I play final fantasy 7 and Chrono Cross more than any of my PS2 games... so it's not that big a deal.

You can't download content onto a Memory Stick and use that.

You can only get the older PS3 model if you look hard at used game stores or something, they don't make those PS3s anymore and they are rare to find.

I also highly recommend Valkyria Chronicles.

more for other things. It can be used as a maya render station and stuff (PS3 CPU is extremely good at those types of calculations). It's just let down by only having 512MB ram.

You can also use Linux to run SNES emulators on the PS3, however, when me and my brothers tried, they didn't work the greatest. Not sure about other console emulation.

Thanks again for all the help. I got the PS3 this past saturday (the 14th.) I only bought borderlands, but i'm having a blast with it. Loony was right, you can do system updates with the pen drive, but downloadable content is a no no. Turns out my neighbor has decent enough wireless that I can get it. Only a 22% signal strength, so i won't be playing games, but it works for web browsing and downloadable content (slow as all get out though, but better than nothing)

Thanks guys, and if I get a gamer-tag set up (thinking about getting a wireless signal booster) I'll post it.

Infamous has a long single player , as does Uncharted 2 and they're both great action/adventure games

Unreal Tournament III has awesome splitscreen BUT you need to have internet to download the patch that enables splitscreen deathmatches.

for RPGs get Demon souls, Valkyria Chronicles and next year 3D dot game heroes!

there used to be an exploit that would let you play NES roms, but without sound, but since all the firmware updates that exploit is loooooong gone unless you haven't updated your firmware since may 2008

nope, updated the firmware as soon as I got it. I can play that on the pc, though. Kinda bummed about the downloadable content thing, since I can't really download much with it. Borderlands has downloadable content announced already, supposed to come out sometime next week. Really hope I find some way to get this downloaded. May have to take it to a friends house so I can use his wireless... have to wait and see.

I will pick up Infamous next, thanks for the reccomendation. I was looking at it earlier and it looks pretty good. Any more good singleplayer reccomendations?

Demon souls strikes me as more of an online thing. I'm sure it can be played singleplayer, but it looks like it was designed as a "quest with friends" thing. I also hear it is ridiculously hard. Thanks for the responses, and I can go elsewhere for game reccomendations, so if a mod want's to lock this topic, feel free. Thanks for the help again guys.
