I've run into a strange bug of some sorts.

I know I've successfully played "Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars" on VisualBoyAdvance before, but today when I tried to play the European version, I only get a black screen.

I've tried to change the settings (save files, type of Game Boy) but to no avail. I use version 1.8.0 beta 3, which so far runs all of my roms without problems.

Has anyone encountered this problem before?

    Ugh~!

How long will other sites keep hosting VBA 1.8 B3 :p

That thing's archaic and outdated already, sheesh!

Use VBA-M hosted here instead as it is up to date:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/vbam/files/Win32 - MFC/

Also the PC versions of the Broken Sword games is way better, naturally. Except for Broken Sword 4 - The Sleeping Dragon which is more of a "Tomb Raider" wannabe instead of a proper point and click adventure.

    RFE - Addendum:

Also read the RomU Discussion thread for VBA-M here:

Then it's a good thing I asked in the forum. Thanks for the help and reply!

    I read it. Looks interesting!

The only thing I don't like with this version so far is that each time I save, too many red letters appear compared with the old version.

While it manages to run "Broken Sword", the emulator crashed a few times.

Of course! But since it exists for GBA, it's only easier for me to get the game and enter the story directly, even if it's inferior to the PC-version.

About those red letters (notifications) you can turn them off within the emu's settings.

I don't know how to access those settings. The Emulation menu has Turbo mode, VSync, Auto Skip Frames, Skip BIOS etc. And the Tools menu has the viewers, sound channels, cheats and layers. The Options menu is about video, input, audio etc.

Maybe we're thinking of different things. I don't mind red notifications like frame rate and so on. But I'm not fond of long red names of the save state.

In the past, VisualBoyAdvance only shows notifications like "Loaded save state 1" in small red letters, discreetly at the lower left side of the screen. But now with VBA-M, each time I want to save, I see the whole "URL" of the save state e.g. "Loaded state 1: C:\[Name of folder]\[Name of subfolder]\[Name of second subfolder]\[The game's name].sav" covering two thirds of the screen. That's... annoying.

And does VBA-M normally crash often and sometimes cause BSOD? It crashed a lot when I was accessing the menus in order to describe what I see. And some time ago before I edited this post, my computer suddenly restarted itself when I continued playing "Broken Sword".

The setting you need to change in order to disable the notifications is in:

Options > Video > Disable status messages. As for your BSOD issue. An emulator will not cause a BSOD as far as I know. BSODs are more indicative of Hardware issues. For this Loonylion is your best person to ask questions to.

Hmm... I must admit I'm too used to VBA beta 3. Now that I've disabled the status messages, I just had to add the status bar in order for me to see what the emulator is doing. Oh well, it's a matter of taste.

Thanks Cahos. I'm currently asking Loonylion for help about my other issue.
