Otome games on the DS! Tokimeki memorial girl side 2 is definitely able to with it's popularity. (but I have to say those cool japanese mushy phrases will sound so weird in english...oh and if they butchered the voice acting...they should just stick to translating the text for dating sims) I don't know why Tales of innocence isn't in English yet...Lots of JRPGs should be localized!
localized? like anime, localized games normally sucks....... i would go with translated rather then localized.
The problem with pure translations is that some elements of Japanese culture that a pure translation does not localize might confuse people living outside Japan. One game I can think of that was localized excellently was Lunar Silver Star Story for the PSOne, those random comments when you talked to the guy outside Vane's Teleport pool were awesome: Guy talking to your party but looking at Nall (the baby White Dragon that looks like a cat with wings): Say how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop Nall: That was an Owl not me Idiot! Same guy: Why do M n' Ms melt in your mouth not in your hand? Nasche: It's because of the Candy coating, don't they ever teach things like that were you live? And on Lunar 2: Eternal Blue: Ruby: These huge birds are called Choc... err Chuckoboos, they're very reliable & pull the Circus train where ever the troop goes. Chuckoboos: Waa.... err Coo Coo
every culture is confusing for people who doesnt learn that culture. edit: pop culture ref is another thing.....
That's why the need for localization. Do you think an eight year old kid would want to learn another country's culture &/or language just so he/she can understand every nuance in a game, when even school work sucks for them? For older players maybe, but kids I doubt it.
8 years old wont care about what happen in the game anyway.... let alone want to understand the plot and culture references..... they just wants to play it.....
It wouldn't really affect the player, if it was a pure meaning translation. It's not really a problem.
