wether for humor or part of the story, I love it when games break the fourth wall by referring to themselves as games. Let's make a list of our favorites shall we, and if you don't like this you can use this list as a warning for which games to stay away from. Rules no games that only break the wall by saying to press a button then asking what that button is, for example "Press B to run, what is B, I don't know." Only big references please, and list at least one example of the break Conker,s Bad Fur Day: The alien boss freezes the game and Conker blackmails the game programmer for more weapons. Star Ocean, The End of Time: Quite a big story plot, so won't spoil it for those who still haven't played this great game.
in phantasy star zero when you talk to the female cast about mags she says hold the l and r buttons for phonton blast then says "i am not sure what pressing the l and r buttons mean, but i'll leave it up to you to find out" i lol
Re: Games that break yhe fourth wall Metal Gear Solid games. It doesn't have any 4th wall at all. A boss that scan your memory card, telling you that you can't continue on certain level if you die, beating a boss that read your movement by plugging the controller to controller port 2 (the game tell you to do it), and there's a part where an information is stored on the back of the "CD Case" the literal CD Case of the game and the person in the game tell you to check it with straight face, not confused at all. And there's many more no 4th wall in this series.
In MGS4: "Alright Snake, time to change discs. I know, I know it's a pain. But you need to swap disc one for disc two. Do you see the disc labeled 'Two'?" "...Uh. No." "Huh? Oh right, we're on Playstation 3! It's a Blu-Ray Disk! Dual Layered too! No need to swap!" "DAMMIT OTACON, GET A GRIP!" "Haha, what an age we live in huh, Snake? I wonder what they'll think of next!" And then Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond makes you very aware it's a game, all the levels are full of references from other games, as well. The main character throws out tons of humorous catch phrases, like this one: "YOU CAN'T KILL ME! I'M THE MAIN CHARACTER!" And I'm not sure if it counts, but they poke fun at MW2 a couple times in BC2. "Maybe we should call in reinforcements?" "Nah, if we do that the army will probably send in some Special Forces Douche-bags with pussy ass heartbeat monitors on their guns!" Yeah, I remember that, and then you have to put the controller against your arm at one point... Fun times. Also in MGS4: "Now I will read your mind, or rather... your past..." "...WHAT?! WHERE IS YOUR DATA!? WHERE IS IT SAVED?! Hm, no memory card...Your skills have improved, or rather, your hardware..." "NOW WITNESS AS I MOVE YOUR CONTROLLER WITH MY WILL ALONE! Just place your controller on the ground as flat as you can... good, just like that..." "..." "WHAT?! NO VIBRATION EITHER!?"
No More Heroes, right at the end. No More Heroes 2 is even better at it, as well as lampshading basically every stereotype and cliche ever.
Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie MGS series Love 'em. I can't remember correctly if Zelda: The Wind Waker had some funny stuff in it.
Warcraft III Just try clicking a unit multiple times... ;D Also, League of Legends- Morderkaiser- "You only need to click once, FOOL!"
3d Dot Game Heroes has a couple of good 4th wall breaking sequences. I know in almost every dungeon there's a developer at the start who's died. And there's a ton of game references, especially to Dragon Quest, Zelda and Demon's Souls.
duke nukem 3d has a few. If you dont do anything for a few minutes, duke says 'what are you waiting for, christmas?'. Also in the arcade in the 'hollywood holocaust' level is a duke nukem pinball machine, if you try to play it, he says 'I don't have time to play with myself'. In some levels theres TV screens showing a police chase, that's a movie reference but I don't know which movie. There's also spoof movie posters littered around, spoofing well known movies such as sister act (its a porn movie in duke nukem 3d). Additionally, the developers sometimes left messages for the player, such as the one below:
[me=hYpNoS]is shutting of his ps3 for this[/me] I remember that...XD What about resident ds, how you can poke Jill or chris when idle...XD "OH!"
It's right after you beat the fourth beauty, screaming mantis or whatever her name was. Oh, another moment from that same part in the game, when your fighting her, it does the whole "HIDEO" thing where the screen goes black like a TV/Video button, and if you hit the Playstation Button and switch ports, and the game goes back, Colonel tells you about how that won't work or whatever, and snake will complain that he can't move. I've only ever done that once though, and that was the very first time playing the game.
The police chase is actually a spoof footage of the infamous OJ Simpson police chase that happened in 1994 after he supposedly killed his wife (Nicole Simpson) and one of her guy friends (Ron Goldman) the chase aired on US TV for days and a near year long trials and other BS. Also those big billboards you see in the game that read "Innocent?" and "Guilty!" are a nod to the OJ Simpson trials as well.
Warcraft 2,Warcraft 3-when you click any unit a multiple times, it will somewhat piss off. If you're in the Starcraft 2 beta-the Thor is hilarious,if you click it,it will say i'm here click me!,it will as well bring out Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes. Not to mention it has a voice that mimics him.
I remember something... Hmmmm....... Contact for the NDS had a lot of 4th wall breaking. One of the characters literally talks to you and the only reason the game is even played is because said character tells you to go watch some other character for a while and make sure he gets back to a spaceship or something. LOL
Pretty sure that's the whole premise behind Contact. The guy in the spaceship communicates with the player, and tells the player to control the main character to help collect what is needed. The game has no fourth wall, the actual player is part of the game.
