7-Zip is a free extracting and compressing utilty that is better than winrar and supports more formats. Google 7 zip and get it!

winrar is easier to use for people who have little understanding of such things.

    I prefer Winrar.
I've used it for a long time.

    I use both.

For some reason, I like winrar better.

Thanks for the suggestion but using 7zip would cause an incredible amount of support, we still get people who don't know what WinRAR is, I'm fairly certain that _far_ more people would not know what 7zip is.

well not knowing what winrar is, is the same thing as not knowing what 7zip is. It's not very hard to explain....7zip pretty much works the same way as winrar, the only real differences are that it's free and readily available and it supports more formats.

Discouraging use of 7zip because of ignorant users is the same thing as discouraging any extraction/compression software.

that's like me saying "you don't know what winrar is? well nevermind then."

Get 7zip and you won't get any stupid registration warnings because it's totally free.

But how exactly is this a site support issue?

It's just a random "use 7zip instead of winrar" topic :)

That's a load of bollocks. I just happen to have the previous experience to know what I'm talking about, 6 years ago when we used WinRAR to compress files, WinZip was still the de-facto standard. Despite having multiple places telling people what WinRAR was we still got several questions a week about it. That's where 7zip is at today. And that's why we're not going to compress most files with 7zip.

And yes, I do know the latest version of WinRAR can extract 7z files.

Then what is the point of 7-zip?

I used to think 7-zip was better, but after finding out that the latest version supports 7z, I got rid of 7-zip.

the point is that 7zip is freeware and winrar is trialware, which they want you to pay for, they both work the same way pretty much but why not just take the free one? Do some of you think it inadequate because it is indeed free compared to winrar?

no, it is less well known and harder to use for someone who is not familiar with this kind of program.

Everything in my world is free. hehe.
And to correct you, winrar is nagware, it just nags you to buy the software, but you never have to buy it.

i think you have to buy it after 10-15 years

...I actually learnt (or figured out) how to use 7zip before I learnt winrar-that and I got sick of the prompts to buy the full version XD

Prehaps it was because I had an older version (couldn't open 7zip files) and the old looking menu peed me off a bit...

Can winrar open that TAR format or the GAR or what ever it's called?

(I still prefer 7zip-number one program now-personally it's the same as winrar-I nocitced no difference between other than one is best as a trial download that last forever XD)

    .tar.gz?
    Winrar can open that.
The last 7zip I had can open it too, but in two steps.

If I want to extract rar-files I do it with winrar.
If I want to extract 7zip-files I do it with 7zip.

    I can work with both.
So, I don't really care what is used, as long the compressed files aren't crushed to death by the program.

    Lol crushed to death...

My 7zip opened it in 1-no idea what happened there.

I would keep both-but hate having too many programs-especially one's that do the same thing as another...]

Prehaps I should replace NERO with image burn-but that won't do mp3/standard cd music will it?

tar is not a compressed archive, and tar.gz is gzipped, just about any archiving program can open that.
