For using Pokesav how do r4 flashcards work for save files?

So you get your pokemon game save file to the computer and back it up using savegame manager, then you edit it on pokesav. when you're done can you download your edited save file on your original game card (e.g. pokemon white) or do you have to play the edited game on a flsahcard? How are flashcards for ds lite used and what are they needed for when it comes to things like pokesav? The more descriptive the better. Please be specific!

Save games can be transfer to and from retail carts using an R4i Save Dongle. The device works for NDS, DSi, and 3DS save files.
Basically you extract your save file from the retail cart, run it on the program (Pokegen being the better version than Pokesav), do whatever you want to do, re-inject it to the cart the same way you got it out in reverse.

While in the case for game rom played on flash cartridges, so long as the .nds and the .sav are named the exact same, you can use it for editing on Pokesav or Pokegen. There's nothing extra needed when it comes to using flash carts for the said purpose. So long your flash cart is up to date and runs the game perfectly, able to overcome the anti-piracy protection found within some games, then that's basically it. If your cart couldn't then you'd probably need to add third party's secondary firmware; which to use depends on what cart you have. Just because it's an 'R4' cart, doesn't then point you to a specific one.
