For once, I agree with the Anti-video gaming crowd

I found this article on gamespot, and it has turned my light hearted contempt towards the wii fit into anger at Nintendo for being so careless.

I know too many people who have been affected by anorexia to find this acceptable. There's no way a console should be telling people how much they weigh, let alone whether or not they're healthy. Consoles are supposed to be fun!

Dang...I think peoples like you are blowing this way out of proportion. It's not telling you whether you're healthy or not, it's simply saying what the AVERAGE person should be to be healthy. Whether you believe them or not is up to the player...

And where do people even get off on thinking that Wii Fit is an actual exercise program? Do they think that being good at Brain Age means that they're geniuses? It's a game. Get over it.

Well sometimes you need a punch in the face to see reality, if you are indeed overweight for instance.

That's all well and good for adults and people who are old enough to know the wii fit isn't the best thing to be taking health advice from, but for little kids that thing is never wrong. They should probably have some sort of age restriction on it.

The daily mail is constantly full of bull shit.
It's like Fox News on crack.

If you are overweight, then get some fucking exercise.
If you're playing a game and IT tells you you're overweight, STOP playing and go for a god damn walk.

    Jesus Christ.

praise to those that see beyond the darkness of mans stupidity.
god damn you just explained everything right there. how can people be so stupid. i like the reaction from that guy demanding a band of the product for kids to play the game [he can't or is afraid to speak his mind so he goes with the crowd].

what about those toys where the body type is slender?! you've got ken, who says every guy has to be slender and built?

Yes take advice from you're games. Infact I learned how to cut off a demon's head from god of war. I know how to power slide on go-karts thanks to mario.

    P.S: I'm being sarcastic.

Let's not forget it was a 10-year old girl...
Even if she is fat, she shouldn't be told....

If the child is overweight, it's the parents responsibility
to recognise that and take action...

I don't know if BMI is calculated for children in real-life situations...
    but i doubt it...

This should be nipped in the bud...
Or next, there could be a Wii game that tells children they're ugly...

Yes, it IS the parents responsible to deal with their fat child. Not Nintendo's. Tell the parents to be good parents e.e

A game that tells children they're ugly?
    LOL! Slippery Slope fallacy.
"If we allow gays to marry, then we have to let people marry animals" >_>

Telling a child they're fat is based on an average weight vs age & height chart.
Telling a child they're ugly wouldn't even use a chart, it would require a subjective view point that there would be no valid chart for.

"she is a perfectly healthy, 4-feet-9-inch-tall 10-year-old who swims, dances, and weighs only six stone"

That doesn't sound like a fat child to me...

BMI is known to have shortcomings...
especially concerning children and people who are active
ie. people who swim and dance...

You're right...it's not Nintendo's responsibility to deal with a fat child..
But it is their responsibility to make the game suitable for their target audience...
    ie. everybody

When there's a reasonable chance that the software will incorrectly calculate a childs bmi,
leading them to think they are fat, of course it's Nintendo's responsibility to prevent that from happening

I assume Wii Fit requires the player to input their age...
It's not that hard to disable the bmi calculation for children...

If I was the type to insult peoples intelligence I would call you an idiot

    Come on people....
Just because we like playing games doesn't mean we have
to fight tooth and nail against criticism directed at them

Are you saying you didn't make a logical fallacy?
And...you did call me an idiot by even typing that. lol >_>

We're not fighting tooth and nail because it's criticism against video games.
This is a pointless attack on something that was never meant to be an accurate fitness calculator in the first place.
It's for FUN, and if you don't like the ESRB rating system, don't buy games! Anyone who cares about something like this is obvious offended way too easily.

Body Mass Index? Still, people shouldn't let stuff like this hit home. It's not meant to be personal to you, but widerange to everyone, maybe the calculations in the game itself are from results from testing in America or some shit. So if you live somewhere where obesity isn't that common, just ignore it. And besides it's not meant to be a fitness instructor, how you feel about your weight should be up to you. I'm absolutely positive with Wii Fit, you have to input an age, otherwise you could be a lightweight 15 year old who is scored anorexic with results meant for a 25 year old for instance. And then it'll tell you to stop exercising and spend all your allowance at McDonalds.

I agree that most people should have the common sense to understand it's just a game, but it's different for kids. Imagine your SNES telling you that you were fat, whether you are or not doesn't matter, the goddamned thing's supposed to provide you with entertainment, not criticism.

    Then don't buy SNESFit e.e
The commercials and game case advertise exercise-eske gameplay.

What you're saying is like buying that DS pedometer game and getting pissed when it asks you to start walking >_>

I've checked, each region's scores are different! I absoulutely lol'd at that, get the 10 year old the American version instead :p
Haha, I bet an American classed as skinny to other Americans would get overweight as their score for the Europe version :D
    Nintendo fails ;D

That's not what I'm saying. I never said you shouldn't use the WiiFit to play games or excersise on, I said that it shouldn't be programmed to judge the user.

Wow you could not be more wrong on this subject iamlegend. First of all, it is not Nintendo's responsibility to do anything. They can make a game that tells everyone they are ugly, stupid, and should have been aborted and that's their right. Nintendo has no obligation to anyone. I don't know what kind of protection there is in the UK, but in the US we have the ESRB. It's THEIR responsibility to make sure that games are appropriately labeled so parents know if it is suitable for their children. If they make a game that makes customers angry, the biggest consequence they should face is alienating their customers.

Also, just because we don't agree with you about this topic doesn't mean we're all fighting "tooth and nail against criticism directed" at video games. Did you ever stop to consider that maybe we think this is ridiculous criticism, that merits fighting over?
