I want to know which one I should get because there's a store near my house that sells both but I only have enough for one. Could you list pros and cons of both maybe?

9 is generally considered better, and in europe its the rarer one.

FF8 has a odd leveling system and magic system. The EXP til next level never changes, it doesn't scale larger, it's always 100 (if I remember correctly). But the monsters don't give more and more exp either, which balances it out. The magic system is the "Junction" system. You "Draw" magic from your enemies, and then can either use it, or store it. If you store it, you can "junction" it onto your stats to give yourself boosts.

This junction system means that the best magics are rarely used for casting spells, and instead are used for increasing your characters, which tends to make magic worthless in the long run, since if you use the magic, you lose your stat bonuses.

FF9 has an ability system, where you learn magic and abilities from equipment. Equip it to use the ability, and earn AP through battles to permanently learn the ability. The level system is the normal system, where the exp til next level increases, and the monster exp also increases as you get higher.

Both have decent story lines. Both have decent graphics (remember, it's PS1, so it won't be huge compared to new games).

Due to the Ability/Magic system, I enjoy FF9 more. And FF9 has Vivi, the Black Mage. One of the most awesome characters in FF ever.

One thing is, in FF9 every playable character is unique and have their own skills.
While on FF8 most character's only difference is their Limit Break and the rest of the ability depends on their GF (Guardian Force)

in final fantasy VIII there is one thing you should be careful of or you will make the game harder...the encounters level will equal the level of the party.

Between the two, definitely IX. I like VIII a lot too but IX was probably the closest to perfection that series has ever seen IMO.

IX certainly doesn't get the love it deserves. =/

Yay :) I'm actually surprised that I own games considered rare. It's rather nice for some reason. Anyway I'd reccommend 9 over 8; 8 just had so many fallacies.

Well. story wise... its Final Fantasy.. No comment about it.

    FFIX is simple.
FFVIII has lots of customization. Can be good or bad, depends on you.

Overall I like IX more (I played both).

VIII is beautiful to look at and nice to play, but you can get too powerful magic too early in the game by simply thrashing away in the academy training center for a while. Although this is the only way to beat the boss on your first mission (you need at least level two spells), you don't need to beat this boss to complete the mission and if you do it this way, the rest of the game is too easy. IX is a stunning game and a joy to play: I think this is the one I would choose if I had to. The characters in IX are more likable (the main character in VIII is just a little too angst ridden for my taste) and everything just flows a little better.
