I recently decided I want to replay FF7 again and it's come to my attention that there are a few mod packages that fix some of my original gripes with the game (Poor translation (e.g. Aeris is changed to the proper Aerith), shitty 3D models, and more stuff along those lines). I got a bit eager to try these mods, but part of me wants to still play the unaltered ugly original release. I wanted to hear some peoples thoughts on this because I'm really on the fence. Also I'm not playing both, it takes long enough playing it through once...
Compare the graphics (Overworld and battle) of FF7 with a game released in the same year... Let's say Mega Man Legends. Take a minute to look up a video of each on Youtube and just look at the difference. It's really really huge and a reason I don't understand why people say FF7 graphics were "Breakthrough". They're probably referring to the cut-scenes, which while pretty, are not what you have to stare at for half the game. Here's what I Think of the graphics: F***ing ugly, you can hardly tell what things are, and remember the several times in which characters have to climb things? Do you also remember Tifa's gigantic polygon breasts going though the edge of things? I do.
Graphics don't matter in a game such as FFVII. Also I couldn't be bothered to download 20GB and mess about just so it looks slightly better, the game still plays identically.
ugly graphics? I actually thought that the graphics were pretty good, plus the graphics aren't even the main part of the game Such a thing confuses me, then again, game appreciation has gone down the toilet with this generation. Regardless its been said before, Final Fantasy 7 was revolutionary within the FF series for its 3D graphics. I played the improved graphics mods and I felt like taking a revolver to the head, it was that awful.
I don't know what was the first 3D game on the playstation but I know you are wrong. Tomb Raider came out in October 1996, Final Fantasy 7 made all of its debuts in 1997, starting from January.
it was breakthrough since it was the first 3d rpg game. before that, rpgs were considered to be 2d. and ff7 changed that. it allowed rpg to have a 3d feel to it
Shit guys, they were alright for the time but fuck, I'd never call it even borderline okay now. They're fucking terrible looking NOW, he's not asking for a history lesson here, yeah, that's great it looked good 15 years ago, but it's not 97 anymore. Otherwise I'd just look for HD UI and a widescreen patch/mod, modding the character models doesn't change the animation so it looks atrocious. Super detailed Cloud with terrible animation doesn't fit as well as terrible looking models and terrible animation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uUhe6yOc-Y That's an entire year, believe it or not, back in 97, that mean a lot in terms of graphics. I would probably compare it to Tomb Raider or more to Resident Evil, both of which had both better animation and character models. FFVII was one of the first 3D RPGs though, depending on your viewpoint, it's a breakthrough I guess. In my opinion it's really not, but whatever.
