So, I'm looking for an external HDD as a supplement for my laptop hard drive as well as for portability. What are some good brands/ types in terms of reliability and cost/ GB? I'm thinking a WD MyBook would be good, but I've heard rumors that it's prone to "wiping".

I currently have two Segate FreeAgent 500GB externals which are quick, easy to set up and ive never had a problem with either. They were also cheaper than other externals at the time I bought them.

I also have a 160GB Maxtor external HD which I despise, its slow, and when its in use is loud and prone to making noises that it shouldnt, currently I only use it for temp back up due to being too scared to store stuff on it. I expect it to explode/catch fire/implode/or any other number of HD deaths rather soon.

I have 3 Seagate external hard disks (not the freeagent ones, they're older than that) and I also have a laptop hard disk in a 2.5" USB enclosure (was the hard disk in my laptop prior to my last upgrade). Disadvantage of that is it uses 2 separate USB ports.

    Hullo good chappy.

I'm using an Imation 160GB Ex HDD. If you are looking for a bare bones / does it's job / cheap option HDD then you could do no better than shelling out for the basic 160GB / 5400 rpms / 32MB/Sec transfer rate . Comes with a swanky carry case too.

In my opinion it's basically better opting for the cheaper smaller Ex HDD's since the cheaper they are the slower the spin speed so a 720GB running at 5400 rpms will take forever to read/write etc. If you are looking for a bigger storage machine then definately shell out for a 7200 rpms or faster version.

Maybe worth checking out those swanky hip wi-fi Ex HDD that are rearing their heads too. Don't wanna be an Imation posterboy but they had one out recently.

    Yeah...

    ...1) Budget: 160GB-320GB 5400rpm
    2) Flash: 720GB-1TB-7200rpm

Hope all that was useful bud. Right...back to trackstanding!

I would go with the Seagate FreeAgent. I't says that it dots and protects your files. Can't go wrong there.

OK, thanks for the advice. I'll look into the FreeAgent and consider some cheaper ones as well.

I have a MyBook. Inside is just a 3.5' HDD from Western Digital (SATA). I replaced my 500gb with a 640gb after it had fallen 10cm while spinning. But it also works with other HDDs (tried a Seagate).

Bad thing about it, is that it requires a separate power outlet. You can't use it from a USB port. If you want that, go buy a 2.5' HDD.

Freeagents also require a power outlet.

i use my book and it works good, i was even able to install linux on it, but when you do get a hard drive make sure you formant it to ntfs not fat 32, if you stick with fat then you wont be able to put files on it thats over 3 gigs

are you looking for those portable hard drive, which are basically 2.5" hard drives in an external enclosure?

if you are, then i'd recommend the western digital. you can get a 500gb for about $130 before shipping and taxes depending if you're buying them locally or from an online retailer as well as which brand.

i have a 250gb portable western digital hard drive and it runs on one usb 2.0 port only. additional power can be obtained through the included power usb plug if the use of one usb 2.0 port isn't enough.
