Etrian Odyssey II quicksaves not working

I tried searching to see if there was an old thread about this, but there doesn't seem to be.

Anyway, quicksaving in Etrian Odyssey II seems to have no effect; when I pause the game in a dungeon and press Start and quicksave, it says "saving...Do not turn off system" for about a second and then says "Thank you for playing. Please turn power OFF" like it seems it should. But, when I load the game again, the options only allow me to pick load, new game, or options, there's no 'continue' option. When I pick load, it just starts me at the last time I saved at the inn. The game works fine otherwise.

My hardware and firmware:
Acecard 2, Japanese 4GB Kingston MicroSD
AKIO 1.5 firmware
under ROM information settings, the save file type is set to 'unknown/auto'
