What is turning off lights going to achieve other than the resulting surge in demand for electricity at the end of the hour, thus defeating the goal they're hoping to achieve entirely.

Earth Hour is/was total BS. It doesn't really do much. Sure, we consume LOADS of power, but the problem is in producing the power we use. The power plants stay working through Earth Hour. If we just consume less electricity, the problem is null and void. The less we consume, the less we need to produce. It's that simple.

There might also be a surge, and there's DEFINITELY a loss in productivity.

Personally, to stay "green", I just make sure everything is off when I'm not using it. :p And I mean OFF.
