hi, i'm sorry about this, i don't know where to post this but i'm not asking for help, i just need some opinions and thought other threads like this had died. i'm aware of the nintendo ds crack hinge issues, but i never knew i would become a victim of this too. yesterday when i opened my ds, i heard a weird noise at the right hinge and to my surprise i saw a crack! :'(
i have my ds lite for almost 3 years now, so i never thought my ds would still experience a crack hinge. i was overprotective... never been dropped, but why... :'(

this is my ds lite. a neat crimson black. the crack hinge is not noticeable.

this is the crack at the right hinge. it's not really huge... right now :'(

the upper screen seems to turn blank when opened or closed too fast. but it returns to normal anyway.

    > so i was wondering if this crack/upper screen will get worse. if i'll just ignore this, will it get bigger or something? :'(
    > i was thinking of repairs like replacement of the casing, but before spending some money and since nintendo was islands away from here, my friend told me that the replacement housing won't last long and it's possible that i'll experience another crack hinge. is this true? :'(
    > and my last option was to buy a dsi :'(. i don't want to give up slot 2, i have my own reasons. but if this will be the case, then maybe this will leave me no choice :'(
    > oh wait, i think i still have one more option. switch to psp? lol. hopefully not :p

i'll understand if the mods will lock this, i just feel so down :'(. i wouldn't be here on romU if i didn't have a ds. i was thinking of leaving this as it is, but i'm not sure if the crack hinge will get worse. anyway, i think ds owners and gamers know what is best and they're around this forum. so i appreciate any posts. thanks... :'(

I have the same casing and the same problem, only for me it is the left side. It happened a few months ago and the only downside I've encountered is that the upper screen can only be closed or fully opened. I don't have electronic problems.

My theory is that the hinge is just a hinge and the electronics run through it.

Oh, and in my opinion, don't buy a DSi. You could try a case-mod. That might include a fixed hinge.

You can buy a hinge off dealextreme. I just ordered one for my other dslite... waiting for it to arrive still though. I also bought a replacement housing. Couldn't hurt to try and fix the hinge/case yourself. It'll be like <17$ (depending on what case you choose it could be only 13$) to fix it with the housing and the hinge... much cheaper than buying a new ds lite/i

Most dsl's crack on that side, I seen 10 all with the same issue.

Poor shell manufacture I guess :(

is it possible that the crack hinge will still happen after the repairs? cause if it does, then i guess i just have to buy a dsi.

...the hinge would crack again anyway after awhile.

Official or not, you need EXTREME care not to have it crack again, I'd advise sticking to the ds until it breaks in half like my brother did.

what?!! my ds will break into... half?!!! :'( :'( :'( really... it will?! :'( :'( :'( are you serious?! :'(

aww... i was overprotective with my ds, i never dropped it or anything. i treated it with UTMOST care, and just like the other ds owners, i don't know why the hinge cracked. what i do know is the poor manufacturing of nintendo, and their customers are the ones who need to suffer :'(

i guess i have to take your advise hypnos. i'll still take good care of this crack as long as i can, but maybe after this i need to buy a dsi. aww i don't want a dsi :'( :'( :'(

btw hypnos, how long would it take for this crack to get worse, but hopefully won't break into half :'(

In my DSi owning I found they pretty sturdy. Mine fell from the top of my table (1m heigth) flat on hard tile ground and didn't suffered anything.

I'm sorry but I haven't faced this problem. :( I'm still on my first DS Phat, admittedly it has a blown pixek but it's right in the corner and has never bothered me. :/
Is there any way that you can replace the exact casing of it, so that it will be the same design, etc?

yup, i'll get this repaired when it gets even worse just like what hypnos said. i decided to stick to my ds lite instead of buying a dsi, i really don't like it. i really love my ds lite, aside from its look and features, it has some kind of sentimental value to me lol. i'll just have to wait for nintendo's entirely new handheld before giving up my ds ^-^

thanks to all who replied here in this thread, i really appreciate it! thank you ^-^

My DS is even worser. You can see the inside on that place.

Warning: Do NOT be rough with it. My screen flaps open like a freak.

I owned a DS lite for a few years now, and i had to replace it like 5 times.. Guess im just not careful with my DS. also, im from singapore and our products are from china or korea. I bought my Crimson DS lite and it seems to be from korea. Its lasted longer then my other DS lites. COuld it be that Korea-made DS lites are more sturdy then US DS LItes?
