im looking for a game with an item system thats like diablo II or borderlands (randomly generated stats instead of pre-set like 'woodensword' -> 'ironsword' -> 'steelsword' etc)

anyone know of such games or similar suggestions?

i know it may be too much to ask for in a handheld system but just asking just in case

this is the most similar I think...

In Disgaea the name of the weapons are fixed
but every single weapon have a random increasing in stats
that depend on how many "population"
there is, or you put, in it...
    :)
and you can "level up" your weapon too
    XD

In Disgaea, Item world is your friend. You can level up items, but with the price of going through a tough "dungeon".

    yeah
    and sometimes is really tough
    I prefer Disgaea 2
    because dungeon are less boring
    since there are "bonus" floor
    XD

umm that's kinda different than what you're saying but in Avalon Code (or some similar name) you can "upgrade" your weapons with really many kind of stuff - from fire, water etc, through darkness, to some illnesses that make weapon weaker. It may suit you a little bit, I suppose :)

It's quite nicely implemanted. You can buy materials from one town for lets say 100gold and sell it off to another town for twice the price.

    Orcs and Elves.

I got other games similar to your request that I wanted to share when I get home. Still out in a shop. :)

Orcs and Elves...? This game is far too short... and Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is better~
