Which is the best for the DS (apart from IX)?
do i need to play them all to get the story?
do they need to be played in order?
which one/ones are a must play?

(ive never tried any of them, looking for opinions-)

They are all un-related, so you can play them in any order. I'd say they're all good.

    Taking this in order.

In all honesty, IX is the best one I've played so far.
Nope, they are completely separate from one another.
Nope, for pretty much the same reason as above.
If you want to try them:

    Main series -
    DQ IV
    DQ V
    DQ IX

    Spin Offs -
    Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 (No English release yet)
    Dragon Quest Monsters: Rocket Slime

I think those are pretty much it. The best I can help is to say, look them up. Dragon Warrior 1 - 3 can be found for NES emulators and such, Dragon Warrior 6 is supposed to be getting remade for the DS, but yeah, haven't heard much about it. In the mean time, you may just want to play it on an emulator if interested. Seven was for PS1, so once again, emulator. Eight was for the PS2, so basically, you'll need a hard copy to fully enjoy it.

I, VIII, and IX are by far my personal favorite Dragon Warrior/Quest games. I wasn't as fond of IV and V, and I've never played II, III, VI, or VII. Two and three are a lot like the first game, and I just know nothing about 6 and 7.

    For the spin offs:

Joker games are basically Pokemon for the Dragon Quest world. They are very interesting games if you can get into it. Rocket Slime is a simple game, but people seem to greatly enjoy it. I've never played it personally.

The V is a remake for DS, originally released for Super Famicom and then for PS2 in Japanese version, there is no much differences between the two,
except the graphic that game offer for each consoles. The VI has been remade for the DS in Japanese, and no sign yet for the US version.

I have played almost all of the DQ series, except for the first few series, which I haven't.
Personally, I like the VIII, V, IV, and IX.

Like they said, you can play it in which order you like, but if the graphic is your main concern ,
then I suggest you to play it from the first one.

Dragon Quest V originally released in Japan on the Super Famicom (1992) then ported over to Playstation 2 (2004) and finally NDS (2008)

That is because Akira Toriyama that created the Dragon Ball series also does Dragon Quest.

He designed the "Blue Dragon Quest Ball" series.

"Chrono Blue Dragon Quest Ball Trigger".

    Sounds about right.

The Jack of All Trades monster looks like a slightly changed Cell from DBZ because of how heavily Akira Toriyama borrows from his earlier work.

Damn I forgot about Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon then there is Tobal No. 1 and Tobal 2 as well.

Soooo...When can we start an unending rant about Dragon Quest VI in English for NDS!?

Nope, I was just doing all the Dragon ones.

Well, his Chrono Trigger models did look almost identical to his Dragon Ball models, so I figured they could count.
The man does good artwork, but he is not very creative when it comes to character design. If only he'd shake things up a bit.

It's almost like Keanu Reeves. He has one acting style that he plays over and over in every movie that he stars in.

Same with Tetsuya Nomura, same spiky hair, cute little girls, et cetera.

Yeah, he was perfect for the matrix, but he really didn't work too well in A scanner darkly. And I like Mr. Toriyama's monster design, but not his character design.

Dragon Quest IX is the first game I ever played of Dragon Quest.
    And I love it!

It is a great RPG with good graphics,
a great story line and awesome monsters [IMG]

The only thing is that I hate turn based rpg's. But I will make an exception for this epic game.
The only other RPG that I am playing at the moment is Final Fantasy VII .

My favourite is the V remake on the DS :)
It's really great, the story is particular, we follow the life of the hero from childhood to adulthood, he gets married, have children and all that is part of the story.
Plus a lot of things happen to him :)
