Does regenerating health work in FPS?

I see most FPS games now days have regenerating health in them. I feel that it has ruined the genre. It works when coupled with a health pack system like in Halo: Combat Evolved and Resistance: Fall of Man, but the pure regenerating health just seems to suck all the fun out of the games. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just getting old?

    probably (age XD)

But I agree it does suck out the fun-and personally it only makes sence to have it on halo-if your not a cyborg of some soft I think it's goofy.

Now, one of the war time games on ds (call of duty world at war, or brother's in arms-forgot which :( ) has it-WHICH FEELS OUT OF PLACE BECAUSE BACK THEN THEY CAN'T SIT LIKE A DUCK AND REGENERATE!

Plus in halo they tried to even it up a bit-in halo 2 they took out the health packs to make it somewhat believable...since he can't rip off the suit and use the stuff...now can he?

Anyway-if not sci fi with cyborg or other somewhat believable technology then it's out of place-and makes them too easy for some.

(My point-if it suits it's fine, story wise that is-if war time game for example and it has this then it's there because they assumed whoever plays it sucks and needs a baby bottle...)

I always considered the health packs in Halo to be some kind of repair stuff, even if he is a cyborg, he still has to look after his human parts.

...but he wouldn't have that much tech skill, otherwise why would he rely soo much on cortona?

I think regenerating health system works if you pull it off well. I think the difficulty of the game would be up higher if it has regeneration, and also forces you to change the pace of your gameplay especially during those massive fire fights because most of the time, games with the regeneration usually give you a lesser ability to sustain damage. Hide behind cover and shoot for the win. While most of the time, games with health packs allows me to charge blindly.

That's true. Although I've yet to play a purely regenerating health game that's challenging. Have you ever played F.E.A.R? It's a great health pack game where you definitely can't charge in guns blazing! I enjoyed the likes of Mass Effect where they had health packs and regen.

Darkest of Days can be insanely difficult sometimes, you regenerate, but it's rather slowly and only if you're not hit for a while, can be a bitch to survive sometimes.

I am not a fan of the whole Regenerating health in FPS games. I feel it takes the panic and fear out of a game knowing that you can duck for cover and be at full health again soon enough. I always used to enjoy being taken down to near death and having to be more skillful to avoid dying. Players had to work harder and practice more to rush through levels with minimal health, searching everywhere for the nearest health pack. Regeneration takes the fun out of that.

I hate the regenerating system. It is not realistic. They use it on Call of Duty and Call of Duty is intended to be as realistic as possible. However, if a game was to actually be realistic, then you would die from the first shot.

not necessarily, its entirely possible to survive multiple gunshot wounds.

I was refering to a deadly shot (ie. in the head or chest). I should have been more specific.

In that case then health packs arent realistic either. You dont recover "instantly" from using a medkit. The most it could help in actual real life is kill pain and allows you to continue fighting but you will only end up hurting yourself more. Im fine with either regenerating or health pack just a matter of how the game designers implemented it. Like I hated Clive Barker's Jericho regeneration system. The damage you take is insanely high and the time it takes to regenerate is pretty long. Plus the game gives you limited space to manoeuvre.

I like health pick-ups more. It adds some adrenaline to the game. You're almost dead, and health pack is lying in the oppsite side of room, with some enemies standing near it. What'll you do? Make a run for it, and risk loading your save, or slowly and carefully snipe your foes one-by-one, while watching your back?
Health regeneration is less interesting - just hide somewhere behind some crate, and pray nobody shoots you... Meh...

In a game like Call of Duty, the latest ones, i believe a health pack would make the game far less fun. The games are so incredibly fast paced that i just cant imagine taking a detour off the battlefield to get a health pack, i'd rather it just tell me... "OK buddy, you're rushing in a little too much, slow your role." And then give me about 5 seconds before i head back out. I prefer that MUCH more than i prefer health packs

CoD realistic? No. It's not even trying, even since the first CoD. If you want realism, try the real war, or go play America's Army or Operation Flashpoint. The type of game where if you get shot in the leg, you slow down and that kinda stuff.

    I find that'd be boring.

One thing I did not like too much about any games without a regenerating system was that after a firefight, I'd be looking around for health packs. This could take a while as I might have to backtrack to get one, this takes some time, compared to have a regen system. It's not that much easier, it's just more convenient.

I just couldn't help but laugh at that false statement (highlighted in red).

Wounds heal over time, but never in an instant. You sir, need to go back to basic human anatomy.

But they don't heal THAT quickly-and you need bandages and stuff.

I liked what they did in mgs3-you have to go to the trouble spot and deal with it yourself.

To regenerate on it's own...sheesh-THAT'S UNREALISTIC!

Sure-in halo it suits because master chief is armoured and is a cyborg-so it's fine...

And unless the auto-regen takes a long time to work-it's horribly fake.

If I'm at 1% in a game and auto regen fixes it in less than a minute then that's bs to reality.

So yes-I change my stance-it can work but it has to be at a "realistic" pace and prehaps throw in some way to do it yourself.

I say have both medi kits and auto regen-auto regen takes place once you got the case-and it takes awhile to actually fully fix-plus your movement is slowed as your applying the kit.

...I have several suggestions-but I think you'll laugh at my idea anyway.

All I can say is mgs3 actually got CLOSE to realistic.

For your information, over realistic games arent fun. Only a rare few people may like it. Try playing ghost recon, its pretty realistic, probably 2 shots or so you are dead and through out the whole mission you cant recover your health. That game good sir, did not felt fun to me

ArmA 2, insanely realistic... but insanely dull.

I'd have to agree with you on that one...

That's why I ethier prefer the old health pack or even mgs3's system where you recover yourself.

Regen is ok but in halo...I'd last YEARS in a death match-which pisses off alot of people as they can't seem to find me-by the time they do I'm in a scorpion about to run them down XD
