Does Dell suck that bad? And Acers?

Does Dell suck that bad? I mean like, I've seen several videos about how shity Dells are. MY school's PCs are dells and they seem to suck at times.

EDIT: I oftenly see that Dells are cheaper than other PCs. I don't think that they are overpriced.

Just asking, BTW, how about Acers? Do they suck as hell too? Both are cheaper than other PC companies. Cheaper than Dell.

LOL, I remember when at Future Shop, there was a Acer "slim" PC that had a Core 2 Quad processor for $399! (4GB RAM, forgot about the HDD, need to find picture)

Edit 2 - eMachines suck too, but Gateway???

yes. Dell are overpriced, underpowered and almost non-upgradable (dell make it exceptionally difficult).

Acer laptops are awful, they overheat very readily.

no matter what brand you buy, avoid slim/small form factor. They're just asking for thermal management issues.

I had an acer lappy once. Paid 700 bucks for it. Had 3gig of ram when most lappys had 2. It broke itself two weeks after my purchase.

No, i'm not kidding. We returned it to walmart and got a full refund.

    Do NOT get an acer.

Yeah, I have a Dell now and it isn't too great... It's noisy and I recently had a wonderful time trying to update my graphics card, but at least it stays relatively cool. My Compaq from 2001 ran better than my Dell.

I believe eMachines and Gateway computers suck as well.
It's best to go with either a computer you built yourself, or if you must buy a pre-built computer get an HP. IBM computers seem to do alright as well, my brother has an IBM that has been running strong for years

I have an HP laptop, and it has served me well, HP is VERY good about replacements (except for that time I had to talk to "You know who" On tech support who didn't understand what I meant when I said "THE HARD DRIVE DOESN'T WORK ANY MORE, IT IS FRIED") They tried to force me to run diagnostics because they don't know anything about computers besides how to read a sheet of paper with a list of error codes that they must refer to.....

Well, I have an acer aspire one netbook for over a year now. I have abused this son of a shit from day one and it only gave me 1-time almost heart attack because of my own error. I spilled my glass of water on it and it didn't start for like 4-5 hours... when i was about to leave the house to get it repaired, i tried to switch it on and viola, it worked. So, i have a swell machine.

The only problem is the overheating, it doesn't go to the point that it shut down due to heat, but well, you will get really worried if its getting hot like any appliances. So, my answer to it is a cooling fan underneath it and a usb mini fan at the side. and its kinda take the heat off, even for a bit. I suggest using it in a airconditioned cooled room.

    How do i abused it?

    - I play games on its 1.60 processor. like pc based games, emulators like ps1 and gba
    - I watch continues movies on it.
    - I let it download torrent files overnight and seed it so on.
    - Its directly powered most of the time like a pc, instead of using its batteries.

Maybe my only problem with it is when you try and play mp3 using its built in speakers while multitasking... its kinda sounding its going to blow and its like reading at super high which is making somebody sweat.

Dells suck. However, the cases are superb.

But as someone above said build your own or buy a prebuilt hp. Those things are awesome and are very easy to upgrade. Only bad thing about hp's is the cpu fan is a bitch to take off and put back on. (Dust likes to hide under the fan, right on top of the heat sink)

Hp's last a long time. My hp suffered through 6.5 years of heavy usage in a dust loaded enviroment before it called quits. And it only did that because it caught a massive amount of surge that caused [important] circuits to blow up.

As for laptops well... Truthfully i prefer more stable software for laptops so i'd have to go with macbooks.

That aside im REALLY wanting to try to make me a hackintosh. Sadly dialup does not like large downloads.

Edit - The Acer Predator case kicks ass in the looks department.

I have an older Dell that I let a friend borrow to...copy..things... >.>
It's a good computer, but it has its downsides.

I also have an Acer Aspire One.

Much like that, but I am running ArchBang! on it, so it runs better than Windows of course. :p

I like my Dell. It's from 2004 and I've only had to upgrade the RAM (512MB > 1GB).
    Currently running Windows 7.

Though, my computer isn't really for gaming but it can run all my Steam games at full settings.

What is archbang? is it a linux distro?

    yes.

The reason I said acers suck is because I bought a top of the range one in 2005, and it cant even play oblivion on minimum settings without overheating, and its been through 3 hard disks because the hard disk compartment gets too hot and kills the disk. (I run it without the cover on now)

No one in the universe will disagree that acer has overheating problem. I did admit i have an acer and it heats up that it makes me sweat literally and figuratively.

The solution to that is how you cool it. Like i said, i have my machine with 2 cooling system. 1 with the cooling fans beneath it and a usb mini fan in the side. I check my netbook if its critically hot by touching the vga outlet in the side. Its near the exhaust so, the vga outlet gets hot too.

I would trust HP more for my pc machine than acer, but the problem is, HP is incredibly expensive so i must settle for my custom built.

I just want to ask a quick question: Can you make a custom built dell? like piece by piece from anywhere to your house and build it to become a certified Dell, or is it always Pre-built?

well since dell DID make alienware then that is one reason not to hate them. but if you're talking about dell computers then YES THEY SUCK WORSE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE!!!

alienware are terrible as well. Even more overpriced than dell and they're put in the most incredible looking cases without a single thought of airflow or thermal management. So they overheat all the time.

while it is possible to build your own laptops, its very difficult, very hard to get the parts, and very limited choice, plus it would end up costing several times the price of a prebuilt. Its not worth it.

It is not possible to build a branded computer yourself.

I've heard something about eMachines. I know someone that owned one and well..
...it was fine to start off with (I played a lot of RuneScape on it whenever I went to their house, but that was years ago)

But now, it turns off by itself and it even turns on by itself!!

Like WTF? When I used it a month ago, I was on youtube and then it suddenty turned off! They still use it (somewhat) but now they use a HP laptop (which is like a year old now)

Now for Acer: I went to a Best Buy one day and I was looking at an Acer laptop. I attempted to play a game on. It was FATE, I think...

The laptop like overheated and like there was a lot of heat coming out of the laptop! I was like, "Oh crap! I attempted to turn it off but it won't work! So I resorted to "unplugging" the power cord. It killed the Acer and well it was a demo so the real one is probably worse...

I have a HUGE HP from '06 with 500gib harddrive and 3gib RAM.

It has the best cooling fan in the history of computers.

I have left it on for FOUR DAYS (4 downloading games for ps2)

    It is STILL cool.

    HP rocks.

Funny enough, this thread reminded me why i have this acer netbook instead of the laptop i wanted which was cheaper and more powerful last year. I got this because my damned uncle went to the cheapest one even though I told him to get a Toshiba laptop. It was on sale during that time, but he got the acer netbook because he said it was newer, smaller and lighter than a laptop. He also said Toshiba sucks and not well built and Acer was. What a douche.

He even lied to me that it has built-in bluetooth and higher harddrive. Also the battery last more than 8 hours. He also praises Dell cause he has a laptop given to him when he was in the US service. He said its even better than HP and Sony.

    Yes, it is.
It's a mod of ArchLinux. I only downloaded it because I had to keep reinstalling AchLinux over and over again because I was messing up. It just uses OpenBox as the desktop environment.

LMFAO when your uncle said that Dell was Better than HP and Sony.
WTF when you beleived that Acer was better than Toshiba. YOu should have done some research or something. ::)

    I guess you've learned something today ;)

I asked him to buy the Toshiba for me but he said Acer was better. I didnt know about it until he went here in the Philippines and surprised me with this netbook. I was pissed but what can I do? Its already here and can't be exchanged.
