I've downloaded Winrar but now a pop-up has appeared saying I must purchase it. It directs to a website rarlab.com. Is this genuine?

    It's good.

BUT It has a 30/60 day trial.
You can still extract stuff after the trial, but it will keep bugging you.

    Just get 7ZIP for extracting.
You can extract all rom games with it too.

BUT it can only compress it to a TAR/ZIP/7Z file though.

You do not have to purchase winrar.

www.rarlab.com is the official site of winrar, if you ever did decide to purchase a license.

It still bugs you until you "buy" it.

I had it for 6 months and never had to buy it.

You don't have to buy it if you know where to get a cracked version. ;)

You don't have to buy it at all. You just ignore the message. It's only suggesting that you pay, not telling you to pay.

It only asks you if you actually run the program. If you use the Right-Click menu and just choose "Extract files" it never asks you. Usually after a while of using the program, you get used to using this right-click menu, and therefore rarely ever see the message again.
