Difficult and fun games are dying?

I was thinking yesterday about the difficulty of modern games. You know, those games with flashy graphics and no go whatsoever.

I don't mind games that are made for people who play from time to time, but i'd also like to see a game that's worth my money in these days.

Example: I saved up some money, so i went to do a little shopping last week and bought Kane and Lynch: Dead men, Heroes of might and magic 3 CE and Gothic 3.
After reading all the rewievs for KaL i installed it and finished it in 3 hours, i was like WTF?! So i played it again on the highest difficulty and finished all missions in 2 hours. I felt cheated, so i threw the game under my bed. Then i tried Gothic 3. G3 is unplayable if not patched and even after patching it, it still crashes a lot so it landed right next KaL.

After i installed H3, i kept playing the game for two days without going to sleep. It's just brilliant :)

So, what's your take on this problem? I mean, sure you can't go and force programmers to make unplayably difficult games, but would it kill someone to make a game that's worth buying? And i'm not talking just about the PC, i've experienced the same problem with the PS2.

This is a fairly common problem, but if you know where to look you can find long lasting games. You already mentioned the HoMM series, The Elder Scrolls series and Fallout series are also long lasting if their latest instalments are anything to go by.

I was disappointed with Oblivion. I actually went and bought a new graphics card for that, but after fininshing it in 3 days i was disgusted (finishing as in having completed the main story plus all side quests possible). I liked Daggerfall better.

Fallout 3 is also more geared towards the easy side and it lacks the feel of it's predecessors, in my opinion. Sure, the net is full of all possible add-ons, but that's beside the point. I mean, that if i go and buy a game, i expect the game to be a finished product worth the money. Not something half-through with the need to wait before the community makes it worthwile.
You don't order a raw piece of meat at a classy restaurant and tell a friend to cook it.

Oblivion is quite long for the regular player. In your case, it doesn't count if you think it's short, because it's really not :p

Dude, i think i can reccommend warhammer 40k : dawn of war too you. high paced mind boggling strat game where a single match on hard would take 2-3 hours at least. another game would be chess, the chessmaster is well known and should keep entertained for days on end. seriously though, you need to keep your mind open when buying games flashy titles dont mean good long games, you know. shop around even check second hand shops, some obscure titles turn out to be good games, not always though.

If you finished Oblivion or morrowind in less than 2 weeks, you're playing them horribly wrong.
Go to theplanetelderscrolls.com and get mods. I've extended Morrowind into more or less the best game I've ever played. Ever.

All we need now is for Nintendo to remake the Virtual Boy but with color and HD and then have a morrowind port to that system with mods and MY LIFE WILL BE COMPLETE!

if you're playing that much regularly then only an MMO would have sufficient content to last you more than a few days.

Jesus man 18-20 hours!? I can only play for 5 hours straight, after that I either get tired or sleepy. loony's right man, you should just log onto an MMORPG if you're that hardcore.

well difficult games are hardly fun..... however if the game is too easy it will become a dull game.

Then again there are some games whos' existence is to make us falcon punch our computer. Anyone who knows what "Dante must die" mode is knows what I'm talking about.

Fixed. DMD was pretty easy by comparison to that one.

@Luk7nk4: I don't think the games are the problem so much as you're just too damn good for them to put up much of a challenge. :p

I can only go 10-12 hours myself and that's not without difficulties. I have to be addicted to the game even worse than a meth addict to go that long. :p

I just like to play alone. I can't stand the thought, that someone would be hindering me. I'm not into those MMO's too much :(
Can't say i'm playing those games wrong, i've been playing Daggerfall for 6 months now and i had a lot of fun playing Morrowind, i just love it! Finished it innumerable times.
I don't consider myself THAT hardcore, it's the games that are soft :p
I've played a demo of that one, it rocked the house even though i'm not into strategy games too much. It's almost impossible to get the full version here though :(

Wow you're so hardcore. I only and hour a day of games. That's why it takes me years to complete mainly because I wonder off somewhere and come back and I'm like "oh shit whats the plot again".
