Did THIS cause a virus?

Please tell me these had nothing to do with each other, so I can redownload, but if they did, please be honest with me. I recently downloaded the Japanese version of Fire Emblem that had Roy, Elliwood's son in it...the sequel to Fire Emblem (U), and a translation patch. The translation patch worked, after I put it together with that i something or other program. If you need more details because you might be suspicious, I'll look them up for you. Shortly after, I got this pop up on my computer saying that it was infected by a virus (in an internet browser) and malware or something like that. I tried to click off of it, but then Vista Guardian took my computer hostage!

Those things have nothing to do with each other, right? I don't really think they do, though right now I"m trying to be extra cautious, so I want to redownload everything, but if they do, I'd rather avoid them :(.

Update: Thanks everyone. I think this convesation's pretty much over though.

Vista Guardian is actually a very dangerous virus or rogue or whatever you want to call it. It even disabled my actual paid for, bought from a store, otherwise I think fairly good virus protectin, I think (something did), and wouldn't let me access the internet except for their site, and I think even took control of my right click and also eventually my computer's normal mode had the blank blue screen and I ended up doing a system restore ><;.

I'm not so sure that any of those three programs have anything to do with it, since they worked and I was playing the game for either the first or second day in a row, and the problem popped up in the internet browser and I tried to get rid of it and that's when it happened, but I'd like some confirmation.

Thanks for the input at least though ^^;.

yes, vista guardian is a fake antivirus, it must have been maliciously inserted into one of our ads.

I don't know if that was sarcastic or if you really think it was inserted into one of your ads, but that's not what I'm asking. If you think it was though, it might have been. The problem actually came up I think when I was playing the FE game and also on Deviantart, actually. I don't remember if I was on romulation or not, and I'm not blaming romulation. I'm specifically wondering if the translation patch or the program I used to install it could have had the virus or something. Plus, I don't think this is the first time the ad for the program's popped up. I think it has even before I met Romulation. It is, however, the first time that I'm aware of that I've had such a problem on this computer.

    Thank you though.

I think I remebered what I used to put the translation patch and the game together now. I think it was ipswin.

I doubt it would be in the patch, more likely it was a rogue ad on a website. could have been RomUlation, could have been some other site, its not really possible to know.

Alright. Just in case, I mentioned in my last post what I think the program I used to put the patch and the game together was.

Thank you. I think it was probably just from an ad too. I just wanted to make sure though ^^. And again, I wasn't trying to blame romulation. As far as I'm aware, the program that I used doesn't eve have much to do with romulation, I think.

    I think... no.

Can you post the link to the translation patch?
Maybe I can test it myself.

    Removing Vista Guardian.

I don't think it has anything to do with the patch.

I think I did remove Vista Guardian. Now I'm trying to prevent it.

Anyway, http://grandbell.net/index.php/fe6translation is the place where I found the translation patch, I think. If the patch, IPSwin, and the game are safe, then I may try them again.

So does that mean IPSwin isn't safe?

No it doesn't. IPSwin is a real program, but viruses can infect programs or even disguise themselves as one. If you do not get it from the official or a trusted source there is a chance it will be a virus. However unlikely that is.

More likely, and has been mentioned, you got it via an ad. This is especially the case if you run Internet Explorer instead of a browser like Safari, FireFox or Opera. I'm guessing you run something like Norton or McAfee since your anti virus is store bought, which doesn't lend much protection against ad-spread viruses.

    I use live one care.

Also, can someone give me a link to the trusted site to download IPSwin from? I think I googled it before. I wonder if it's some super crime to recommend those programs or something, what with people saying to google stuff instead of providing links. It seems kind of fishy, honestly.

How is that possible, people ask.Well, think of Adobe's security problems. When you are propted to install stuuf/updates from Adobe, you go to their website and download the file. Looks normal but actually, there could (and probably always will be) be a leak that allows the hacker to make you download a file from Adobe which is attactched to an Adobe item. Confusing but it does happen!

Whenever you download a keygen, patch or anything else from the Internet... go to Virustotal.com and check it there. As long as you don't run the EXE it normally can't infect your PC, if Virustotal says it's malware delete it and don't run it. Also, from my experience Comodo antivirus detects the gaming malware better than everything else, especially in No-CD cracks.

Are we still talking about the virus? I just want to know where I can download a safe version of IPSwin at this point.
Thank you everyone for all the input though ^^.
