Devil may cry 3 pc portable patch help

recently. i got devil may cry 3 for pc. it was a portable version which said you didn't need to install just extract it from the zip file and play. tried it on my PC. works well. but im not much of a PC gamer so i tried it on my laptop, which has vista. major lag graphicly errors, on the lowest settings possible. at first i didn't know why because my laptop has better drivers and stuff. so i looked for a patch and found one. it fixed said it fixed some graphical errors and made it vista compatible. so i got it and ran it and it said i didn't have devil may cry 3 installed, because it was a portable.
is there a way to patch it? like a program that extracts exe files or something? or would i need to get the acually DVD or iso? please help me :'(
