I always heard that OpenGL was the faster renderer(Did i spell it right?), But it seems that on my new computer, Direct 3D is about 4x as fast, even with other resource hogging features enabled?

So...this is what the discussion is gonna be about..Which do you feel is fastest, and why?I always heard that OpenGL was the faster renderer(Did i spell it right?), But it seems that on my new computer, Direct 3D is about 4x as fast, even with other resource hogging features enabled?

Note: I'd like this to be a discussion instead of just a poll, post your thought about each while you're at it =D

I don't know about faster, but OpenGL was around first and is opensource, therefore can be made to work on any platform. Direct3d is a microsoft invention and thus only works on windows.

2DamCerius My eyes for your brain...fair trade.

OpenGL would offer most compatability for most softwares and it also proves to be quite versatile with respect to D3D. I am not sure which one of those is faster, but I think OpenGL would be, since it was out the longest.

Direct 3D has a ton of usage for games based around the Microsoft software. Whereas the OpenGL is used primarily for developers who want to modify a certain application between the computer and executed program.

My thoughts about this keep bringing me towards something that has to deal with the HUD. I could see that the user needs to implement a GUI into the general scope of the matter, but I am not sure as to what these would be needed for in this situation.
