OK this rant is more directed at people in the know...No offence intended to others....

Why is it that the copyright agencies bitch and moan to no end about torrent sites which share 'illegal' content but you never hear about law suits against rapidshare for example. I mean half of the warez and crap that I get via torrents is also upped to rapidshare or similar file share? I mean the common argument for torrents is that they only supply a file that contains information such as hashes to tell the torrent client what and how much and where from its downloading from, they dont actually host any warez themselves, Fileshare sites on the other hand are actually HOSTING the files for download, so why arent they stung too? Am I missing something here?

They believe that torrent sites are more illegal than file hosting sites because the warez etc. are supplied there. Rapidshare and megaupload etc. have lots of warez hosted, but they also have a lot of stuff that isn't warez. If you look at some of rlslog's downloads, they have a torrent for it, and several other download links.

Thats my point exacly, RLSLOG for example doesnt actually supply a torrent, just a link to search for it, what RLSLOG supplys is a blog entry followed by rapidshare or similar direct downloads, IMO thats much worse than torrents. And dont forget all of the legal legit material that is supplied via torrent.

The simple answer is they see torrents as more of a threat to their monopoly.

Though 3/4 of the human population doesn't even know how to use BitTorrent. You just need to click a link on RapidShare to download it, without any extra programs. I personally think RapidShare is more of a threat than BitTorrent.

with torrents you can't report the problem, but with rapidshare you can report the problem.

With torrents, you connect to other people and evidence that you were purposely downloading illegal material is much easier. Even if your ISP doesn't want it to be, some would rather cover their asses and try to stray from torrents as much as possible. Generally, what you download from RapidShare is encrypted, or atleast compressed so you're not directly downloading the illegal content. Not only is RS the only server you're connected to (and to save their asses, they'll be as confidential about it as possible, obviously) but your ISP generally isn't legally allowed to go like "hmm this guy just downloaded a rar let's hax0r and check what it extracts to on his PC!! LOL!!!!! GHEY GAIS!"

I agree that sites like RS and MU are bigger problems than say the recently jailed Pirate Bay founders.

I've personally downloaded more illegal content easily worth more from RS/MU in comparison to what i've got through torrents. I download PSP games and albums from MU while I only download Movies/TV from torrents (obvious reasoning). PSP games and albums are worth more on retail than DVDs so it's clear which sites should be getting sued...

The only people who should be getting sued are the uploaders.

Also this is partly political. The likes of piratebay intentionally provoke the copyright holders (see their 'legal threats' page), therefore the people pulling the strings want them taken down as an example, because they can't handle being a laughing stock.
