Hey, so my computer has been in need of an upgrade for quite some time (only have 248mb of ram D:). Anyway, so I want to upgrade my ram and sound card. Ram because... well I only have 248mb and that's just pathetic, and my sound card because I would like to start recording my bass guitar playing.

I pretty much have the ram down (ram is ram right?). I was going to order this -

    2gb for around $40

And I know nothing about sound cards :(. So I need a little of a lot of help.

I know a lot about bass and a bit about recording it. I have everything set for pre-computer stuff, I just need a sound card with a line in that can handle the frequencies.

The bass frequency range is 30hz-2khz so I need something that can handle really low bass (though I can cut some of the lower frequencies if needed). Anyway, I don't want to pay a lot but willing to pay as much as it takes to get a decent sound.

Any info is great on the sound card.

Also, I'm hoping to get an external hdd (my pathetic comp only has a 70gb hdd) looking for anything cheap with 250gb of space.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Judging by the ram you are buying you own a laptop, is that true?

Nope just upgrading my desktop... The ram is defiantly horrifying for a desktop I know.

that ram will not go in a desktop. You need DIMMs not SODIMMs. You also need to make sure you get the right kind, DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 are not cross compatible. Judging by the amount you have, you probably need DDR or even SDRAM.

Soundcard wise if you're not interested in anything other than recording, then the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 is quite cheap these days, it doesnt do gaming or surround sound though, so if you want those features you're probably best off with an asus xonar.

Ok, if I open her up will I be able to tell what kind I need for sure?

If I got one of those would I be able to use my motherboards primary sound card for playing sound and the audiophile card to record?

running two soundcards isnt generally a good idea. The audiophile can output sound but its two channel and no fancy stuff like EAX.

regarding memory, a program such as cpuz will tell you what you need.

Oh, well that's not a problem.
Alright, I'll look it up. Thanks for all your help.
