Compressing a dvd rip

Hello, my friend has requested a copy of predator 2, the movie...I just made a straight rip.

...But the rip is 5gb, thus defeats the purpose of ripping it.

But I have heard about programs that can compress it, like those rips you see on torrent sites, and I'm wondering what can I use on this 5gb rip to make it something...more portable.

The rip was done by dvd dycrpter.

There is a program called DVD shrink, it takes any dl dvd and compresses to single layer... keep in mind that video quality and/or audio may suffer... ((suggest taking out the commentary and special features before reducing actual quality.))

I have that program, but I said RIP and not an exact copy of the movie.

He wants it so it can run on his ps3 as an avi file...but as 5gb I can't burn that to a disc/throw into a ps3.

AND he wants decent quality, I offered him a psp formatted version but he dislikes iot even though it only has slight audio and visual issues which I barly notice.

What do you mean by more portable. Are you wanting a program to make the movie fit on a DVD.I thought a PSP only plays mp4,so does a PS3 play that format. Is the DVD a copy/from a download or a genuine one.

    ...

It needs to fit onto a fat 32 compatible device, psp and ps3.

He doesn't want it formatted to psp format because he disagrees with any degradation.

I would only burn it to a dvd because he's too far away to just lend him a usb drive, thus I throw onto a disc and give him that.

I'd make him a straight dvd copy, but the file it's self is far too large for single layer dvd, and compressing a dvd that is dual layer would loss some quality, which is not what he wants...it's a dark movie anyway so he does need quality.

LOL,a dual-layer does give you a clue, its more data than 4.3gb.I think I could get it down to about 400mb for the PSP to play, but the quality is bound to suffer.

I would just use that VSO program I keep telling you about and burn it onto a disc and see how he likes that.

I had a few looks, all he wants is the movie file it's self, the vso isn't doing what he (and myself) want.

The movie from the disc AFTER ripping is 5gb, normally when i do these rips, it's 3gb, the rest is menu or special features filling it.

I will say, while the psp program does an ok job, the volume quality does go down, and only about 5% of the screen is messed up (on the psp it's perfect, on the ps3 full screen zoomed, you loose a small insignificant part of the screen).

I had someone awhile back suggest a program, they also advised dvd dycrpter to do the ripping...but I forgot what to use for the compressing part.

Until that person comes online I'll wait for anything else, all i need to to compress a 5gb file to maybe even 3gb while keeping high quality.

Why is he wanting to do this-is it to use parts of the film for other things.

Im only used to putting downloaded films or copying films onto disc....

To install the movie onto his hard drive of the ps3.

And I want to know this as well, prehaps I could upload movies some day like how they do on torrent sites.

Right now I'm experiementing with my psp format converter, if done as normal but as square instead of widescreen it might be better.

I only expect audio volume to go down in order to preserve quality.

If you want like PSP formats, when you have spare time muck around with this:-

    Get Handbrake free software
    Get Convertxtodvd4.
    Get DVD Decrypter/Slysoft AnyDVD

You can start off with a DVD,decrypt it and run it through Convertxtodvd(adjust volume to louder). Then run that file through Handbrake on 100% quality setting(instead of 81% for about 400mb file) and see what size of file is produced.

You should get the software above and save it for later anyway ;)

I only am planning to send it via disc to transport it, he doesn't want a dvd formatted movie, if he did I would have used dvd shink on it's own.

He lacks tools/knoledge to rip it back out again, and ripping from a compressed movie isn't any good ethier because quality is reduced.

LOL,the Convertxtodvd step is for shrinking the movie and getting louder volume-not for use in this instance for burning a disc.

Putting it simply= 8gb(original film) down to 4.3gb(with louder volume)=possibly down to 400mb(in psp format).

But all i'm doing is ripping it twice, that won't help keep the volume high (well maybe) nor the quality...infact it might be lost using that method.

Youd soon know if Im right or wrong after you try -it will only take about 2 hours. The software is handy for keeping for other projects you may have in the future.

you are not going to be able to compress a 5GB DVD to 2GB without losing quality, its not possible. First try converting to main level h.264 and see what needs doing then.

    mds64 Well-Known Member

Could you explain how to convert it to h.264, i have heard about that...

So far I managed to compress it using my psp movie converter to 1gb file, but the movie doesn't exactly fit the screen...and the volume is a tad low just like before.

And the dvd isn't 5gb as a reminder, the ripped VOB file (which I can rename into an avi and play) is.

i have a friend who is well versed about this, im gonn ask him about that i owe some bucks and im gonna pay them today so i kill 2 birds with one stone, basically he sells movies with everything, from menu to commentary and extras, in 4.7 Gb discs, and having the same quality of an original DVD, i belive he uses a ripper program,a nd removes any extra data thats is around, im not 100% sure about this, but ince you use windows i can ask him.

you need the raw video file (no menus or anything, just straight video and audio) then you run it through a transcoding app such as ffmpeg. It takes a long time.

Should I rename the vid from VOB to avi or leave it?

    But we don't want/need the menu's :p

But ask him anyway, more info, the better.

you need to rip it first, using something like copydvd, so you end up with a video file of the movie. .vob files are technically .mpg files but the movie is split across multiple files.
