    Ok, so, i'll buy a new set of removable ram for my laptop and my Grandma's laptop. I have no problem with mine cause it uses a PC133 sdram, butmy grandma's laptop uses a pc2100 ddr... so i have 2 questions:

    1.) Is there a alternative, compatible pc2100 ddr ram?

    2.) How much ram can a laptop handle? i mean, for example my laptop only can handle a maximum of 384mb of ram, then i inserted a 512mb/1gb, what will happen?

    Thanks in advance!

    PC2100 DDR is PC2100 DDR. there are no equivalents. You need a 200 pin SODIMM form factor, the other types are for desktops. You can use faster, however it runs at the speed of the slowest component (so PC3200 DDR will run at PC2100 speeds) PC2100 is also known as DDR300.

    2) depends on the laptop. if you put more in than it can address then the extra is unavailable.

    so, i just can use other ram models as long as it has the same pin connector and it fits snuggly? so it will not goes berserk and overheat or something unimaginable like it will have zero memory and probably not run?

    also, so if i put a 512MB ram as a removable ram in my laptop which can only has a max of 384MB, it will only register the maximum 384, and the rest 128MB will be worthless?

    Cause i think the problem of my 256MB removable ram is that half of it died, and the other half is the only ram that is read by the laptop. it only register 220MB. 128 from the non-removable and another 128MB from the removable.

    it has to be DDR. Not SDRAM (PC33, PC66, PC100, PC133), not DDR2 (PC2-xxxx), not DD3(PC3-xxxx). so long as it's DDR in the correct form factor, it will work. It's not advisable to get memory faster than the board can take (e.g PC2700 or PC3200 in a PC2100 board), but only because you're probably paying more than you need to (probably not the case any more with DDR).

    Not quite. Your laptop has 128MB fixed memory. 256MB will be used from the removable module, leaving 256MB unused and inaccessible.

    Best thing is to do a google on your laptop and look up the specs on it to see what it can handle. my old laptop uses PC133 and I was able to put 2gb (x2 1gb) but thats the max I can install.

    yeah, i did that with my compaq presario 700, a very old laptop. and what i found out that it can only handle a max of 384MB, 128MB from the non-removable and a 256MB from the single, removable slot. its ram is a PC133, so i placed a 256 MB to max it out. but the problem is, i think half of the 256 is dead and can only recognized the 128 from the removable and 128 from the non-removable. totalling a 220MB from the system properties.

    but my grandma's laptop is different, i only know that the ram is a pc2100... and its unavailable it stores at a cheaper rate, and the only store i found has it but i hate that store for its unbelievably high repair/price ranges of their products.Also, i dont know what is the maximum amount my grandma's laptop can handle. Its a toshiba dynabook satellite. Its already have a 256, and i want it to go faster cause she uses it for her casino games which is frustatingly slow.

    Model numbers would help, but on what little I gathered on the Toshiba 512mb (x2 256mb) or 1gb (x2 512mb) might be your maximum you can try checking online for memory like at newegg.com

    The compaq 700 I read a few places that 512mb might work with the soldered 128mb plus the 512mb gave a total of 640mb but they also downgraded from XP to windows 98 too.
    heres where I found the info you might find it handy.

    hope that helps some, if not you can shoot me later.

    I would suggest using www.crucial.com, it allows you to enter the make and model and it will tell you how much memory the computer can address.

    * Maximum Memory Capacity: 1572864 MB
    * Currently Installed Memory: 256 MB
    * Available Memory Slots: N.A.
    * Total Memory Slots: 2
    * Dual Channel Support: N.A.
    * CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
    * CPU Family: mobile AMD Athlon(tm) 4 Processor Model 6, Stepping 2
    * CPU Speed: 1195 MHz

    so this is what showed me when i used the crucial scan... so, thus that mean, i can support a 1.5 GB memory?

    and thanks madmannero, i check it and it said it can support up to 1G but i cant seem to find a pc2100 anymore... unlike the pc133 that i can still find.

    it does seem to suggest 1.5GB yes. If you can't find pc2100, there's nothing technical stopping you using pc2700 or even pc3200.

    hmmm... is that a bit weird? for something that supposed to have a maximum of 384MB?

    ok. i found a pc2100 but it only has 256MB. I just would like to ask 1 last thing, what would be the worst possible situation if i put a pc2700/pc3200 in a pc2100?

    it would run at PC2100 speed.

    the scanner may have malfunctioned, try choosing your laptop make and model using the form on the crucial site rather than the scanner.

    I clean forgot about crucial that would have saved some time. Thanks again Loony!

    This is a weird question but i'm going to ask it anyway. is it possible to get a virus from a ram module? like its a ram of another pc, then put it to a new one then if the old comp has a virus, then the new one will also get it?

    no, it is not. Ram loses all data when it is unpowered.

    but is there a type of virus that like prevent you from getting the built size? like if its 1G, then it will only register 512? even if you put it for the first time without allocating to any parts, like graphics?

    no. Either the ram module, slot or memory controller is bad, or its ram above what the memory controller can address. In some cases the module may be bigger than what the controller can handle in a single slot, in which case all you'd see is the amount it can address in one slot.
