did, and tried to turn off graph. accel. also did a full spyware/antivirus scan and cleared everything temp off the pc. "just went and did a full maint."

its weird. also, i just installed hijackthis and the folder icon which is now below startup is funny looking even thought i installed it right now, but the actual shortcut icon shows up proper. the shortcut is at default within

    start\allprograms\hijackthis\hijackthis.shortcut

also, on a note, when clicking properties on a shortcut, the proper icon displays in the properties description.
problem seems to be mostly cosmetic, worried it might be my vid card toasting "probably not" or malware/virus "tested and going to more" or simply my old HDD burning out "checked it completely a few days ago"

    wtf???

Is your comp running slower than usual or are you getting weird error messages?

it is completely unnoticeable. it seems to be completely visual.

try updating your graphic card drivers..?

im running the newest compatible nvidia driver, it was fine for a while after that and its a stable build so it shouldnt be that.

is there a file that controls the visual of the icons? i might install something then do a search for modified files.

I assume you should be looking in C:\Windows.

get tweakui and try the 'rebuild icons' option on the 'repair' tab.

i looked on the main HDD because not all changes happen in \windows. it seems very possible it'd be in documents because thats the relevant section. regardless though, i'll try tweakui. i'm probably sounding mean but i'm not being sarcastic or anything. in the list you can see results from the windows directory.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

tweakui's download page, FYI incase anyone wanders in here.

    tweakui resolved the problem, thanks.

That happened to me as well.Nothing technical just visual.Repairing windows wont help neither would updating the drivers. The only damn way to get rid of it is reinstalling windows.Try and you will see it works.Try tweakui as well it may help.

;D :D ;D :D thanks for the help. i like this site more and more. the problem is resolved and fine now tweakui worked like a charm and i am now changing other stuff using it.

my theory is that the file became corrupted and is a file directly responsible for display, and only display, of the icons. since there was no impact on anything except visual.

i forgot to scan immediatly after to see which file it is, but it is most definatly one of the above.

there is no single file responsible for icons.

I know the problem has been fixed, but I was wondering if you installed nVidia's newest "beta" driver? I wouldn't suggest their beta drivers to anybody. Always get the official non-beta version.

Install new Drivers in my opinion. and, just a side note.. if you do not know how to use HiJackThis correctly, I suggest never using it. It's a powerful program that can fry your computer, and cause lots of harm to different programs and drivers in your system (Believe me. I learned that the hard way! :( )

using hijackthis to produce reports for experts to look at will not harm your computer. The experts will then tell you which buttons to press.

i just noticed more posts in here. hijackthis is a relativly easy to use program. read instructions.

combofix is an extremely powerful program. AVOID IT!! i used it 1 time because i was going to lose all my data anyway through a complete redo of my pc "nasty virus" as a last resort, i used it and it worked.

saved me from having to start from a clean slate.

i have been infected with the ieantivirus "stupid curiosity" as well as the virtumondo? "accident"

they are both fast acting and nasty, i had to go on my second pc to get the programs to fix them as they almost completely disabled the affected pc.

as for drivers, betas are betas because they havent been fully tested, some people have problems, most dont. or they'd be alphas. ;)
