this is very funny news. i like the suggestion of using digital downloads when we have proof that it isn't a working concept.

I always laughed whenever I read Sony declaring the pspgo a "success".

    Resale people. Resale.

what will kill nintendo is exactly what killed sega. Announcing a new console while the previous one is at or not yet at its peak.

The features of the DSI could still be exploited, but really; i think that it's about time for the DS line to get a proper second generation. I don't think that the DSI was enough of an upgrade to stretch the lifespan of the console very far into the future, the DS has already peaked. Also, the main thing that killed Sega was the same thing that killed the N64; the Playstation. Sega couldn't just have waited for its previous console to mature, it had to bring out the Dreamcast because the Saturn was a dead and buried; the only maturing it had in its future was rotting. The Dreamcast didn't have enough support from developers, it was too expensive, the PS2 was looming and so it failed.

It also isn't known what form of storage the DS3D will use for it's games. I think that Nintendo used the DSI's DSIWare service to see whether consumers would be prepared to embrace downloads on a handheld console; i'm not sure whether or not DSIWare would be considered a success though...
Iwata has talked about implementing 3G into a future Nintendo handheld before; this could mean that the DS3D will use a 3G connection for purchasing and downloading content.
Personally; i think that Nintendo will begin with solid copies of games being sold in stores and additional content for said games will be downloadable to an SD card. Then, further into the future, they could switch to offering full AAA games via 3G rather than just the limited games offered on DSIWare at the moment.

Sega died as a console maker for many reasons, including the PS2 and the thing that loony said. Mark you're forgetting that Sega hsa made the Sega CD, 32X and the Saturn. None of these console (and add ons) did any good. Along with that the Sega CD and 32X sucked, sucked hard, they also cost a lot of money, I think the 32X was 300$ when it came out. Sega made their fans skeptical on if their next system will be good or not.

Although I think the DS peaked a while ago, around when Mario Kart came out, that's when I heard that it was all the rage and everyone plus their mother was buying one for themselves. The DS came out around 7 years ago, that's a lot of time for it mature as a handheld, and it's done good at that. It's about time that they made a new DS.

the saturn failed because sega announced the dreamcast before the saturn had reached its peak, which put people off both that and the dreamcast.

That's it. If there will really be only digital downloads, I'm buying ol' PSP instead. And I'm really sorry for those who bought DSi, you just wasted your money.

Sega died because they didn't stand behind their products. This relates to what loony said about them announcing the next console before their current one had matured fully.

I finally read the article, hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. I don't think he really knows what he's talking about. Flash drives are really cheap now, and UMD's cost MORE than DS' cartridges. Nintendo already has started doing digital distribution with it's Wiiware/DSiware, I doubt it'll move onto actual DS games (as we all know about the PSPgo and how that was successful). Also judging that Nintendo has a fascination with making things available to everyone, I highly highly highly doubt the 3DS will follow the digital route for games.

Digital distribution has only worked for one 'handheld', and it's the iPhone/iPod Touch. I don't really understand how and why but eh.

Sega showing a lack of faith in its own products, which as you and Natewlie said, was likely a factor in the failing of the Dreamcast. But the Saturn was never popular and would only have become more obsolete with age, the Dreamcast was the most advanced console on the market when it first came out; but the announcement of the PS2 which was riding forward on the popularity of the PS1 before it eclipsed the Dreamcast in the minds of most people. As you said though, the lack of support for the previous console and the their poor support reputation of the Saturn as opposed to the PS1 probably discouraged consumers from buying it. Also, as Natewlie said; Sega had near bankrupted themselves with failed console ideas and were low on funds which was another factor.
I wasn't implying that the things i listed were solely responsible for Sega's forced exit from the console business, i was saying that allowing the Saturn a longer lifespan would not have made it more popular or saved Sega from its fate.

tbh, I think the reason the PSPgo failed was because there was no transition phase between digital downloads on the PSP and the PSPgo and they didn't put in the second analog stick. :)

Yeah I read the article as well and didn't think the writer had done their research.

The only reason I want a PSPgo is it's functionality with a PS3 controller, that's about it. Games are more expensive on the Go, new accessories for it, all that jazz. I don't know but it's like Sony did it on purpose.

Mark and Loony, don't forget that Sega had a couple of the worst (erm, most interesting) video game ads of all time around the Saturn/32X and Sega Cd. :p

The Saturn one is fresh in my head. When I was a kid watching that, I was afraid.

Did they have those freaky PSP ads wherever you are? The ones with the Mexican fluff balls; they were psychotic...
Here in Britain Nintendo roped in loads of British "celebrities" to advertise the DS games such as brain training. Seeing Girls Aloud (a -in my opinion terrible- girlband) advertise DS games made me not want them. The one with Captain Bold Man from Startrek on a plane was nice though.

As Gaynorvader said; the fact that the PSPGo didn't have a second analogue nub was yet another stupid decision by Sony. The smaller screen, its incompatibility with accessories and games for older models, its price and the fact that it's apparently uncomfortable to hold all weigh against it.
Natewlie: Just because Sony failed at digital downloads doesn't necessarily mean that Nintendo will though. They could still be available to, if not everyone, most people if Nintendo allows a free 3G connection for downloading games like Iwata was prattling on about before the DSXL was announced.

They weren't freaky, they were just so damn annoying and had nothing to do with the PSP. The PS3 ads around when the PS3 first came out were even worse though. For the DS, they usually have adverts featuring Beyonce now.

I know I never said that Nintendo couldn't succeed with it, it's just that it's kinda skeptical and all that jazz. The one thing I don't like having digital distribution is that I have to have my credit card number on my system, it's bad enough on the Xbox and PS3, but to have it on a handheld? Ehhh. Plus I enjoy having physical copies of the games, not digital.

The biggest problem with 3G as of right now for me is that where I live, it isn't reliable and most telephone companies are total crap around here (disconnection issues, and reliability), some phone companies like Rogers aren't even available here.
