Halo, Gears of Ware, Mass Effect, Uncharted 2, Oblivion IV, etc. Some of the most successful games of this generation, and all of them are FPS games. Can someone pls enlighten me why these games became monster hits, when all the player has to do is aim right and shoot someone in the face? I'm not bashing FPS games in general though. I loved CS back when I was a kid, and I can see how a lot of people loved Left 4 Dead. But I fail to see how FPS games can sell millions..
FPS... New gen games... Fuck them all!!!. I can't see how it is possible that a game so _______, (add your favorite adjective here) got to sell so many copies. I think the kids these days go more for the graphics than the playability... so sad. Any way, it is getting bad because the gaming companies now just want to make games like that. What happened to the old school 2D graphics games that make me fall for the games?
Yeah they do that I wish they were adding more features and better story etc but they seem to make graphics better and that weird cause that would probably cost more
Nintendo try's to make new gen games in the style of old games, the result? a heaping pile of dead animals with spikes jutting out of it. I think 2D graphics are good when appropriate, but I like Playstation graphics the best... It would be pretty ridiculous making a game with Playstation style graphics for the 360 though
I dunno. I played Oblivion, and it sure has some FPS elements to it. I mean aiming the spells right, aiming your arrows right, etc. But anyway, so it's simply the graphics that's the main reason why these games are popular? I've been reading reviews about mass effect and they say the story is good, the gameplay is good blah blah, but when i see the gameplay vid, it resembles kind of like GoW2 which is not a bad thing by any stretch, but it's not overly outstanding either.
Oblivion has a 3rd person view you silly wrong person, you can switch back and fourth. You can easily dumb down gameplay for any game those 2d platformers you're comparing these "new" games to, well the only thing you do on them is move from one side of the stage to the other destroying enemies See, it's very easy to make something look boring if you only talk about basic aspects of it.
Some could say it's because it's the legacy of fps that's the reason, after all wolfeinstien and doom were the fathers of fps, heck an old aliens vs predator game on the atari jaguar had the makings of the currrent fps games of today. It could just be the fact holding a gun in a realistic sence (first person view) appeals to people, as if they want to hold a gun., though the same sensation can be found in paintball, laser tag, water guns, dart guns and (to a lesser extent) the classic game of chasy/tiggy/tag your it Prehaps it's just easy enough to play (for most male players-though some women enjoy it) yet hard to actually master. Or as I suspect, games that avoid violence, conflist and don't aim for realisim/in your face action don't cut it with professional reviewers and user's alike. All I know, is halo, aliens vs predator, mag, golden eye, doom even...all seem alike...but I still bloody enjoy them especially the lesser aliens vs predator game out currently, if only because I'm a big fan
The recent surge in First Person Shooters is because war is now being portrayed as something thats cool, just look at the hurtlocker for example. The reason FPSs like COD sell more is because they are targeted towards the mainstream because thats where the money is right now.
hmm... maybe because many gamers, including hypocritics, likes very fast-paced games. and not just in their faces, but they could also aim for the toes, if not too hard.
FPS's appeal to the older crowd as well as young gamers. but the older crowd has more money so i think thats a factor. they're aiming games at older people now. thats why most of the games out now are rated M. Before ps2 and x-box hardly any games were mature. and Everyone is all about playing online. That's about all fps's are good for. fps campaigns aren't the greatest.
