Can I get some advice on the PSP?

First of all, I apologise in advance if I have broken any forum rules. I have searched the forums, and also read the rules, and I think its ok to ask this.....

I currently have a DS Lite and its great to be able to try out the games before I buy using a DSTT card. It eliminates any expensive potential mistakes.

I am thinking of getting a PSP as well, as it has a lot of games I like, but it doesn't seem as easy to "try before you buy" on the PSP as it is on the DS lite.

I see there are three different models of PSP available, normal, slim and lite, and 3000. Am I right in thinking it is only the original that can be modded?

The question is, how easy is it to do? Some of the threads here mention things like Pandora's battery, but have no idea what one is? I am not massively technically minded (medium tech level I would guess) so was wondering if it was even possible for someone like me to be able to mod a psp, and if so if there is a thread on here, or even advice elsewhere, that will show me what to do.

Many thanks in advance for your patience - and sorry if you've been asked the same thing before.

no, more like there is only one PSP that can't be modded (PSP 3000 I think).

I believe there is a tutorial on downgrading PSPs, and almo is the guy to ask about it, I'm sure he'll answer this topic when he comes on.

    PSP- 3000: Can't be modded
PSP Slim/Lite: Likely to be higher firmware than PSP Phat but moddable
    PSP Phat: Moddable

It is easier to mod lower firmware PSP's, but some Phats can be higher firmware than slims and firmware isn't too difficult if it is high anyway...

It's actually easier to "try before you buy" on the PSP, as the PlayStation Store has demos for a huge number of games, so if all you want is to try games before you buy them, I would suggest you check out the PS Store.

Thanks for all your help so far - so if I was to go out and buy a PSP Slim and Lite today - would you guys be able to help me getting it working, even if it is pointing me out to reputable suppliers / links?

I would be very grateful if you could.

To start with, I take it I need a Pandora's battery? Is there a good, reliable, quick supplier of those in the UK?

Also, I see a magic memory stick is needed, but I presume I could get a normal memory stick and the correct files from the internet?

Would it be good or bad protocol to pm Almo and ask him to look in? Thanks again all!

If you're brave enough you can actually mod the whole thing yourself. To make a pandora battery you just need to cut off a certain pin from the battery check the tutorial. And yeah I would suggest you avoid the PSP 3000 as it cant be modded as yet and chances are when it can, theres going to be bugs for a while. Check it out I got a PSP slim and I can play both PSP and PSX games

oh you have to cut a pin? how come all my friend did was just download something onto his psp and then press some buttons and his psp was modded? but yeah slim and lite is probably the best to mod cause well it's new and slim who doens't like small things now a days :p ;)

Me I suppose? I prefer my fat for n oreal reason, the 2000s just seem dinky and have a horribly plastic feel to me.

^ yeah the phat PSPs are actually quite nice.

As said above only the latest PSP 3000 is completely unmoddable, also some of the later motherboards in the slim and lites arent too happy about being modded either.

The modding (or downgrading in the PSP world) is actually pretty darn easy. If you want to take the easiest road then buy yourself a pandora, they are easy enough to make but if you dont want to fuck around cutting the battery open and cutting traces or breaking pins while not blowing off your hands then I think buying one would be the better option.

People keep mentioning dealextreme.com for cheap pandoras batterys, though ive never dealt with them personally being in NZ and all.

the only other item you need is a memory card, and the patience and ability to follow a tutorial. the downgrade process is actually extrememly simple, and once its done then the PSP is virtually limitless.

I wouldnt bother for maybe a month or so, the orders are really backed up. The suppliers have been on Lunar New year holiday and haven't been producing very much. When they do get their stuff shipping, its the cheapest option I've seen. The pandora battery and 2gb pro duo was 17~ american dollars. The pro duo is a fake of course, but they say the speed rivals that of the real versions. Haven't tryed them yet myself =/
