I am debating on doing a partition on my HDD and install XP on it as I have some programs that work better on the XP OS and might save a headache or two, well for one I have never actually done this before but reading up on it doesn't seem that hard to do except finding a work around for my SATA drive, but my question is would it even be worth trying and considering my PC has no floppy drive can i even do this to begin with?

Any and all suggestions welcome and also any easier directions I also take donations in the form of money, beer, games, and reese cups.

well....i've heard of it being done with vista...and no floppy is required....but you'd probably have to format to allocate the proper space into multiple partitions....do you have a windows 7 disk, and an XP disk? because you will need both, and they need to be of the same architecture...which means they can be one 32bit, the other 64bit, they either have to both be 64 or 32 bit....

you can do it, but you'd need a modded XP install disc (modded in that it has the sata drivers added in).

They can be different architectures providing your processor supports both, and it is possible to resize partitions without reformatting.

when i did it, i had issues with resizing my partitions, so i did a fresh install....but yea, processor may matter in that...but i could use only the 64bit architecture for some reason....

To solve this problem, I simply installed another HDD in my computer (took out the floppy drive and put the HDD there, changing the boot order to have no Floppy drive in the boot sequence). I just take off the side and plugin the power cord to whatever HDD I want to use. One is ArchBang and the other is WinXP Lite. I just didn't want to redo my entire windows system when I have it all setup perfectly. Plus I have around 100GBs of games and stuff. :p

If you don't have another HDD, there is always GRUB for a bootloader...if I'm correct?

I can do a partition without any issues occurring, as I done it once monkeying around but I didn't use it for anything and removed it later. As for having and XP disc I have one, but I don't have a Windows 7 disc as it was pre installed so the back up is factory set in a partition I which I should be able to back up to disc(s).

Now, for loony's comment I take it I can take my XP CD and make and image of it and place in the SATA drivers in it and burn it off? (and as a side note is there anything you don't know? :p)

As for installing a second HDD yes I could do that, but unless it takes IDE I don't see adding a 2nd SATA solving anything except creating extra space for my pirate stash. :p I haven't cracked the case yet to look to see what I can actually install but I am doubtful there is an IDE plug in there, but I could be wrong.

I did it with a standard xp disc.
I had to uninstall vista because when i added xp it wouldn't recognize the older windows so i reformatted my HDD put xp on FIRST then put windows 7 on 2nd.

if your program doesn't involved to much graphics (like games/photoshop) I think you should try virtual machine like Sun VirtualBox (free) or VMware. google it

Now, this could just be me being ignorant; but can't you change the Compatibility settings of the programs which run better in XP?

yes, but windows 7 is missing quite a few components for DOS related programs if i am correct.. it's why i couldn't run Star Wars:KOTOR II - the sith lords....T_T

EDIT: forgot to mention, the reason this transferred over to the VM, is because my hardware doesn't permit hardware emulation. T_T

No believe me ive tried, windows 7 lack dos support. You can use dosbox but its sometimes ridiculously slow.

vmware isnt always the answer due to the virtual hardware.
