Ok so for christmas I'm asking for a new computer (around 800$) and skyrim since my current computer is terrible (1GB ram, 1 core, etc). It's gonna cost alot and I don't know how persuade them, since I don't get an allowence or have a job (im 14. harhar.) I'm thinking of bringing these points
    1. Telling them how bad my comp really is after researching it
    2. I'am willing to give up my birthday present this year for the computer (and maybe, my christmas present for enxt year, I really want it)
    3. I'll do a months work of washing the dishes for after all meals
    4. I'll pay them with all my christmas money (if did not get any, then Bday money)
    5. I'll pay them in increments to total 150$ to pay off the cost

Also, I'm underage for skyrim, but it doesn't look M. My dad wont mind, but my mom will, how will I persude her to let me? It doesn't look bad at all, I'm used to gore and violence really.

I really really want this computer and skyrim really badly that I'm willing to do the above things I just absolutely love RPGs and this looks like the RPG I was waiting for. What else can I do to ensure this? This is ALL I want for christmas, literally. Help me please :'(

So you plan on playing Skyrim without a GPU? Good luck with that.

Unless you just forgot to include it, in which case, please elaborate.

Oh I forgot lol. I'll add it after, loony is still finding one, besides that, how is it?

Nothing. Apparently Thailand is under water so any new drives will cost you double than what you would've paid like 6 months ago. I'd say get a used hard drive if you can from craigslist or eBay.

Well all-around it looks decent. The only issue I see is that you're probably going to need to upgrade a lot of these parts in the near future. I don't know what loony would recommend for a GPU, but if you end up doing SLI you'll probably need a larger PSU. You'll probably also want to go for a more powerful CPU to start with, as if you want to upgrade that you'll basically have to get a new mobo, as well. Don't know what you're planning on using as an OS, but make sure you have one lined up when you're accounting for cost.

I can't remember off the top of my head when the new GTX cards are coming out (for GPU), but if you were to wait until then, you might be able to get a discounted 570; I'm running one without OC and it plays Skyrim on Ultra with no issue.

Speaking of waiting, I'd act on that HDD fast; prices are surging in many places due to the flooding in Thailand, where most of the major companies' HDD components are made. In addition, you might want a separate drive for your OS and crucial programs; I picked up an OCZ Vertex 3 60GB SSD for about 100 dollars at NCIX when I was making my gaming rig, and have a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar for most of my storage needs.

All in all, I don't see any major issues, but I'm not really an expert in this.

EDIT: I can tell you right now that if you want a gaming machine, you should opt for a dedicated GPU. Otherwise a CPU upgrade would set you back the cost of a new CPU, new mobo, and potentially a new GPU.

So I've heard, I have a 500GB external drive, but I'd prefer an internal really.. Would it be ok to re-use my current hitachi external and get like a 200GB internal HDD? How much would that be?

  15. Petey

    Petey Well-Known Member

Well, you can boot Windows off your external if you really want and save you that extra cash $

What about these?: (I researched while loony compiled a list, since I wanted to have backups)

    Intel i5 2500K: approx. $210
    Asus P8P68-V LX: approx. $220
    8GB DDR3 G-SKILL (4GBx2): approx. $50
    MSI Nvidia 560Ti: approx. $230
    Antec TruePower TP-650W: approx. $66

    2. (Premade)

Btw dont worry about windows. my friend is giving me a copy of his windows 7 over the holidays

Edit: Besides that guys, how can I persuade them? =/

    Magoran Well-Known Member

The 560Ti price should drop even more soon if the new GTX cards keep rolling in. RAM is generally RAM, but you can probably save another 10 on it if you shop around a little. I'd upgrade to 700W at least for the PSU, just in case you decide to throw more things in there later.

Premade isn't bad, but would probably cost $700-$750 if you just had it custom made somewhere else.

EDIT: as far as the main topic of persuasion goes, they're your parents. We won't really be able to tell you what you have to do to convince them. How reasonable would they be to this? Offering to get a job and give up impending gifts until your debt to them is paid off would definitely show maturity. It also depends on what kind of dent that would make in the household funds. If you're in a medium-income family, this is probably reasonable unless there have been great expenditures recently (such as a new garage, new car, remodel, etc.). Ultimately you should just talk to them and find out what they really think of it.

Still needs a hard disk and a case, as well as an optical drive.

You can skimp on the graphics card and use a late 400-series nVidia or a 57XX/58XX/67XX/68XX Ati card (which isn't even skimping, really), but you want one. Onboard GPUs are bad. I don't care what loony says, you are not going to get much out of Skyrim unless you have a discrete graphics card.

Not really waiting =/ Christmas is my only time to get something big. I'm not making my parents spend over 850$ either and I need points to back it up.. Without the points, no comp in the first place, so I gotta stop dreaming this up first and find some points. No offense though, the feedback helps. So should I just get the premade? I can find it around 700-800$, but would it be able to run skyrim on high?

You'll have frame rate issues at medium. That thing has an awful graphics card on it.
