Buy New Notebook can't decide?

Discussion in 'Computers & Modding' started by Crimson_Stigmata, Jul 22, 2008.

  1. Okay so basically from my summer job I got 2k, and I was thinking about spending it on a new notebook because my old one died. Ironically it too cost around 2k but was a pieced of crap coughToshibacough.

Anyways here is what really gets me. I either spend 2k on a new AlienWare m15x with like the low end stuff with just maybe the enhanced screen or get a Macbook Pro which is about the 2k as well, but I know for sure I can get 100 dollars off because of student discount. Don't know if alienware gives student discounts.

I really like the Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard, plus I'm a designer and well it's kind of industry standard to use a Mac.

Then there is the problem of gaming which I do quite a bit of so there lies my problem. I know I can install Windows on a Mac but not the other way around...well legally you can't coughhackintoshcough.

Or there is another option...I hold off for a few more months and get 4k and deck out the M15x or even get a M17X but they are kind of heavy and I want something more mobile and basically ditch the mac totally?

Both of them are pretty over priced...but I checked out FalconWest and a few other gaming notebooks and it seems you get more bang for your buck with alienware, plus I like the backlit keyboard and such.

Go the MAC Book Pro, you can have the MAC OS for work and such, then you can install windows for games and other fun stuff. I got my MAC about 6 months ago and its a f*&king brilliant machine, ill never go back to PC again.

    For Notebooks choose Mac's
    For Desktops choose Windows

  4. Thanks for the input guys. The only thing about the Macbook Pro that is throwing me off is the low end graphic card...well not really low end but for gaming it's pretty average...I checked the benchmarks against other graphic cards it it scores around 4k while the newer ones are 8k >_>""

I might end up getting both >_<" I really wish they offered a better graphics card.

::Sigh:: If I get a macbook pro it looks like it's only going to be for surfing the web and designing stuff on the go, or while I'm stuck at school for the whole day. T_T" That doesn't sound like it's worth 2k just for that.

get an ultra portable notebook to carry around, then a mid-range desktop for gaming.

  6. I already have a high end gaming rig, I need something to bring to school and work, while not being bored out of my mind.

I think I might end up getting the macbook pro >_>" since it can dual boot windows and such and since it's industry standard to use a Mac and if you don't you get frowned upon.

Just don't get a MacBook Air.

  8. I would never get that, no Optical Drive and only 1 usb Port?? That's terrible.

If anything I'll get a Mac Book Pro with the minimal options and trick it out with these:

    HDD
    *** HM500LI - Samsung SpinPoint M6 $306.68 with tax and shipping

** HTS545050KTA300- Hitachi GST Travelstar 5k500 $236.98 tax and shipping

    * HM320JI Samsung SpinPoint M6 @ Newegg $121.75 tax and shipping

    RAM
    *** KHX5300S2LLK2/4G - 4GB 667MHz DDR2 Low-Latency CL4 (4-4-4-12) SODIMM (Kit of 2) $121.84 with tax and shipping

You even need an external drive for the thing, since it's so bloody thin. Pro is a good choice, we only have two pros at our school, quite nice. (our school's poor)

  11. Yeah forgot that it doesn't even have a HDD because it's so bloody thin....I would maybe think about it if it was a tablet. I have seen some Modded Mac Books that are tablet but they have no keyboard and you have to write everything seems a little troublesome and they go for around 3 grand. >_<"

Wow you school must be really poor? My school is pretty crappy too especially the art department we get the least funding while communications has their own lab across the street with new Macs and everything. Of course we aren't allowed to use their equipment either.

In any case there are a few design students that have Mac Book Pros. ^-^
