i have recently embarked on a challange to play the greatest games of all time. i have read alot of ''best of lists''. alot of titles i have already played and some titles despite their good reviews i know i wouldn't enjoy eg sport games, guitar hero etc. also games older than ps1 are just unplayable by todays standards not just because of graphics but also due to the fact that i have probably played a millon clones of a game that was once revolutionary but in trying to go back and play that game all impact would have been lost. getting back on track i noticed a trend in ''best of'' lists and that was a high number in rpgs in top spots. i do enjoy the genre i so my quest is now being side tracked to best rpgs of all time for the fact that rpgs often have very good storylines which all other genres are missing with a few exceptions and i think this is what can make an excellent game. so heres my favourite 10 favourite rpgs and i would like to know what titles are your favourites and why and which i should play to finish my quest of greatest rpgs. 1.ffvii (obvious choicebut theres a reason its an obvious choice) 2.chrono trigger 3.ffx (excellent story and music) 4. zelda twillight princess 5.legend of dragoon 6. ffix 7.elder scrolls iv 8.pokemon fire red 9.xeno gears(would be higher but it had a terrible battles system) 10.fallout 3(would be higher but it had little storyline and is a bit too dpressing!)
the last remnant is a good game. twilight princess really isn't that good, I'd swap it for ocarina of time, which is way better. Also secret of mana, FFVIII, legend of zelda: link to the past. Seph used to rave about elder scrolls III, and shemue 1 and 2, plus skies of arcadia are supposed to be must plays.
shenmue is hard to get a hold of if you don't have a dreamcast. you must also include FF6 if you have FF7 there. super mario rpg was pretty fun, lighthearted, but fun nonetheless.
Top 10 favorite Rpgs... this might be tough. 10:Super mario Rpg 9:Final Fantasy 6 8:Thousand Arms 7:Vangaurd Bandits 6:Elder Scrolls: morrowind 5:Starwars:Knights of the old republic 4:Breath of Fire 3 3:Vandal hearts 2 2:Final Fantasy 9 1:Vandal hearts 1 being my top fav, 10 being the least, my list is a lil old school but most of them games I can play for a long time, where as alot of the new ones bore me lol. The final fantasy are pretty straight edge anyone should know them, but you should try Vandal hearts, and Breath of fire 3, they're both really great rpgs, Vandal hearts is pretty old school but its still epic has side quests to obtain secret stuff and it's pretty damn difficult, other than that, ya really have to check them out.
Okami is fantastic. Stay the hell away from it on the wii though, unless you like carpal tunnel syndrome. The two Parasite Eve games are also great, and that one whats it called that Square made but no one gave a damn about it... Uhm... You played some guy with ridiculous hair, and it was semi-platformer.
Here's mine.. 1. Final Fantasy X 2. Shin Megami Tensei : Persona 4 3. Shin Megami Tensei : Persona 3 / FES 4. Ar Tonelico II : Melody Of Metafalica 5. Final Fantasy VII 6. Kingdom Hearts I & II 7. Shadow Hearts II 8. Wild Arms 5 9. MS Saga : A New Dawn 10. Xenosaga I/II/III and many more...
I can see a lot of final fantasy titles coming up in these lists and I'm no exception! 1.FF VIII ('Cause squall is the man!) 2.FF X (My fave ff story) 3.Alundra 2 4.Star ocean: Till the End Of Time 5.Pokemon red 6.Kingdom Hearts 1 7.Zelda OOT (twilight princess was weak as hell as far as story is concerned) 8.Lost Oddysey 9.Fallout 3 10.FF IV (DS Version) FF7 would be on there but I can't place it higher then 1. I definitly agree about fallout 3. Would have been nice to have a bit colour for the sheer size of that game.
Where's Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and SaGa 2? Oh, and will people PLEASE stop calling Zelda games RPGs? It has hardly any similarities with RPGs...
But you play the role of link and it's a game. Albeit he doesn't have a 12 foot sword or overtly crazy hair but he does converse with fairies and other magical garbage. It's more a puzzle based action/rpg without the grind leveling.
Which was horrible...even for a 3rd person shooter. The only RPG part was that you level up. Even COD4 has that. Army of Two has the weapon customization much like DOC but would these all be classed as RPGs?
well... some of the game have RPGs genre in it.. and most of the game maker have mixed one or two genre into one game...
the main ingredient of RPGs is that you get to customize a character in one way or another. you can't customize Link, so Zelda games are not RPGs IMO.
no you can't, his clothes are always getting upgraded, but you can never choose which clothes/armor to wear. he CAN change equipment though, but so can megaman, blackthorne, and even mario. we don't consider them RPGs now, do we?
