Hey, I recently applied for quite a few jobs because I want to buy myself a laptop , I will not be able to buy one that is very expensive, But I want one that is good value for money ($1000 or a bit higher is probably good.)
please reply and help-If you can.
PS: I'm Australian and I don't have any credit cards or debits, neither does mum, so no WAL-MART online xD

I live in Australia and I bought my Acer Aspire 5315 laptop for a little over $500.

It's certainly not the best laptop around, and won't be the best laptop for gaming....but it is great if all you need it for is browsing the web and using it for school.

A few of my specs are:

    - 2.13GHz
    - 533 MHz FSB
    - 2GB RAM

Yours is better than mine is some aspects :)

It can do devil may cry well to boot.

...There is one place...student pc-forgot my laptop's price-but it has blue ray-and simerlar stats-I would suggest giving them a look up-it's in australia-not sure if it goes past victoria though :(

But they were a good bunch otherwise...just wish I bought it so I could tell you the price-dam mum doesn't want me to pay her back.

I want to mainly use it for web browsing and gaming-but I'm not gonna go playing crysis anytime soon xD
I'm also very concerned about battery life-I want something that can run for a decent amount of time.

My battery on a full recharge only lasts 1h 30min. Which is just rubbish.

Yeah- I just watched a video on your one, it looked great until I saw the battery life.
the guy at harvey norman showed me one for $1300 which had 8 hrs battery life but a 10 inch screen.
I really want something cheaper than that, but with decent battery life.
I hope that's not too much to ask for xD

most laptops have around 3-4 hours battery life, if you want significantly more than that its going to be an ultraportable, and they are pricey.

Hm, I understand... Would that be just browsing the net, or would doing other things (Multitasking, games etc.) reduce that?
btw, Thanks for the help :D

anything that exercises the processor/disk drive/optical drive will reduce the battery life, yes. The time given is generally an average involving word processing, watching a DVD, and browsing the net. Wifi use will have a significant impact on the battery life.

I use a netbook. Netbooks are lightweight, portable, and have impressive battery life (9+ hours on some). Their screens are generally 10 inches and below. They are not good for gaming, but who wants to game on a laptop anyways?

I've never seen a netbook quoted for more than 4 hours battery, which is why I want an ultraportable laptop (9 hour battery).

Netbooks have WAY more than four hours of battery life. Trust me.

Could someone explain to me what Ghz are, because all the long life laptops seem to have a lower ghz than the normal ones.
    what does it affect?

Ghz is the number of operations per second the laptop can perform, in other words its speed. more speed consumes more power.

Gigahertz is a measure of a CPU's clock rate. A 1 GHz CPU operates at one billion cycles per second. Looking at the clock rate of the CPU is a quick way to see the overall performance of a computer, but there are many other variables that affect the performance of the machine.

And on this note, overclocking a CPU refers to increasing the clock rate of the processor greater than the manufacturer rated clock rate.

    Edit: Ninja'd. :(

Oh ok, So would the difference between 2.1 and 1.4 be signifigant?

yes, but not if you're only editing documents and browsing the web. Only in things like games would it be significant.

Grr, It seem I can't get a laptop that has good battery life AND can play games proficiently :(
On a better note, My dad called today and said he had an old laptop to give me, and next year I am chosing to do a tafe-based course on computer assembly and repair, so making that laptop usable will be like a hobby xD
I am thinking that I should just get a laptop and have it plug into the wall xD
