    Avast! Antivirus. It's free.
Also get comodo firewall. That is a very useful program.

if you don't care about price, i recommend ESET SMART SECURITY 4, it's $80 USD a year....but it keeps out all viruses, is proactive, and rarely gives a false positive....there's a website which constantly updates with trial keys though, so you never have to pay!

go to above link, then click on first option!

I have to second the comment on Avast. It's a freebie, but aside from a pop-up window on every update that does nothing other than announce that the software's up to day there aren't any downsides. It updates itself every day and since I got it I haven't had any trouble on my Windows PC.
Of course the other choice is you could just get a Mac or Linux computer :p

avast! does have a downside... its painfully slow at scanning.

Mac and Linux are susceptible to viruses as well. They're just not seen as often due to Microsoft having the largest share of the market and most of the people who write the viruses and such are really only in it for the money.

On-topic: I stand by Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free so you won't be out any money if you want to try it out.

That may be true but if you just set your screensaver as the avast! saver it will run scans whenever your screensaver turns out which is awesome.

i stand by this post.....anyways, i've been reading some bad things.....one thing i read was (this goes for mcafee, AVG, Norton, and AVAST!) if they start detecting any more false positives, pretty soon MS paint will be a virus.....

I've used many different virus protection products (Norton, McAfee, Eset, Microsoft Security Essentials and more) and I find that Kaspersky Antivirus protection product is the best on the market. It does not slow down your computer, if fact you don't even know it is running and protecting you. I'm using the 2010 version and is great for $50 you get a one year license for 3 pc's and you get a free upgrade to Kaspersky 2011 when is launch in August! I recommend it completely.

Norton has a very low rate of false positives. Because it doesnt detect anything at all.

it's not technically, called an update, it just means it allows you to move to the next version, because of your 1 year license....anyways, Kaspersky's missed over 300 viruses that ESET found on my PC, and gave me a false positive on almost all my keygens, that's the reason i switched....

MSE is a very good program, as he says, but it is very, VERY, [bold]VERY[/bold] slow at scanning. Its also free. Avast is a good antivirus if you're willing to pay some money (Which you are, right?).

I personally use Avast and I love it. I run a very secure machine regardless, but even when something does slip by me, Avast is usually there to catch it. I get a False positive every once in a great while, but Avast is usually really good about not picking up things it isn't supposed to. Most of these people who complain about False positives get so many because they have Heuristics set at "Brutal" and have it checking for PUP's (Potentially unwanted programs). This will provide a great many false positives, simply because you told your AV to look for them. As for what the guy up above said, complaining about the Pop-up notifications, you can turn them all of very easily.

As for Slow-downs, I don't even notice Avast is running most of the time. I've got mine set to do scans when I'm away from the computer and it stops when I'm not here. The "Real-Time" protection is quite good and quite un-intrusive. Norton is Junk, AVG is decent, but the 9.0 Update tried to eat my HDs. Kapersky I've not heard anything bad about, but I'd rather use a free solution like Avast.

I love Avast!. It isn't too terribly slow at scanning and works very well. It caught a few things that Microsoft Security Essentials couldn't too. Really, Avast! is just fantastic.

I haven't had a virus in quite some time with Avast!, Comodo Firewall, and Spybot Search and Destroy.
