hello, i am a wanna be programmer and 3d artist, i was wondering what is the best free program for 3d models that will work on a laptop... i tried 3dstudio max but it said that my laptop was too slow... (1gig of ram) i tried blender but i need a num pad. help me please...

... i'm planning to make a megaman game that'll be much better than the movie coming out (much better) it takes place from his creation to the X series. it'll be realistic looking and with 3d action and movie files, free roam that'll tell the story line and actual missions to get experience and special items: it'll be like splintercell (not conviction) meets grand theft auto meets spiderman for the ps2 (i'm debating whether or not he'll have a grappling hook or make the map have ladders to get to rooftops).

thats what i hope for :p

blender is about the only free 3d modeling program.

Another free 3D modelling program is Google Sketchup but it is still limited to low polygon modelling. It is supposed to be used only for houses, floor plans, etc. but people have found it quite useful to make low, and if you have LOTS of patience, high polygon models. Give it a try.

the first thing required before attempting: do you have any experience/understanding w/ anything you've just stated and plan to do ._.

you need to be a programmer.

... you don't have to be, there are readily made engines, you just have to look.

ready made engines are either limited in capability or the license agreement is restrictive.

you forgot to tell him to take art and GFX design
he'll need to learn how to make textures, something in art, and how to create a model+terrains.

oh, prepare to dish out money because only a hardcore computer can handle some high level realism in games, and the rendering.
1~2GB of RAM won't cut it for game development
