Could I ask what the average net speed for someone in Australia is?
Because I feel like my net is third-world standard compared to my friends xD.
    When I download something it says I have a 27 kb/s download speed :(
I am on bigpond liberty with *cough* unlimited downloads (if you read the fine print, it says speed is reduced to 60 kb/s after 10GB bandwith is reached- but I seem to always have 27 kb/s)

I think you mean kB/s. 27KB/s would suggest 256kbit broadband, 60KB/s would be 512kbit broadband. I'm guessing your package speed is 1mbit or 2mbit. If you have an ethernet modem or router, it should have a web interface with a page that tells you your connection speed/attenuation/SNR, if it is a USB modem then the icon in your windows taskbar showing when it is connected will tell you the speed.

I have both adsl broadband and wireless broadband and I live in Australia. Both of them hang around the 150kb/s area when downloading. When uploading, speeds vary between 20-40kb/s.

I'm on BigPond's ADSL2+ Liberty 25GB plan, by the way.

Inter-Australia speeds are great, but "exterior"/world speeds are poor, beacuse of the limited capacity of fiber/copper coming into Australia.

Your speeds are so bad because of the distance from your server. 400km is very far away. You've got to move away from Perth and move to Sydney. :p
