upload it to an imagehost such as photobucket.com and paste the url to the image in the avatar box in your forum profile.
Oookay~ First you need to decide on an avatar. RomU's avatars are 96x96 pixels in dimensions at maximum (find the dimensions of an image by right clicking, click 'Properties', and then it should say Image Dimensions along some other specs). This means that anything larger than 96x96 will be automatically scaled down. As long as it's perfectly square, such as 50x50, 64x64, 120x120, etc., you shouldn't have too many issues regarding quality, but I personally like to size mine in Photoshop to exact dimensions. If this option is not available to you, try to stick to 100x100 avatars and under. Next, you need to upload the image. I suggest http://www.tinypic.com/ because it's a simple click and upload system that doesn't require you to create an account. Just click 'Browse', find where you saved the image (somewhere easy to find, like 'My Images' or 'Desktop'), and then click 'Upload'. When the image is finished uploading, you'll see four different URLs listed for you to use. You want the last URL labeled 'Direct Link for Layouts' - it should start with http:// and end with an image extension, such as .jpg, .gif, .png, and so on. Select or click the URL, right click, and select 'Copy' (or CTRL+C). Now that your avatar is hosted on the web and you have the URL, click the 'Profile' tab at the top of RomU's forum. On the 'Profile' page, you should see a menu/navigation of sorts on the left: ---------------------------- Profile Info ---------------------------- Summary Show Stats Show Posts ---------------------------- Modify Profile ---------------------------- Account Related Settings Forum Profile Information <<< CLICK Look and Layout Preferences Notifications and Email Personal Message Options Under 'Modify Profile', click the 'Forum Profile Information' link. The very first thing you will see is avatar selection, and the option to use your own avatar. Check the 'I have my own pic' bubble, click in the text box, right click, and select 'Paste' (or CTRL+V). After you've inserted the URL to the avatar you uploaded, scroll down and then hit the 'Change Profile' button. Next page loads and then, you have your own avatar.
The avatar doesn't necessarily have to be 96x96 pixels in size. Check mine out. See? The coding on this forum automatically shrinks & resives your avatar for you
yes, but it doesnt always make a good job of it, and whats more, people have to download the whole half MB every time they enter a thread you've posted on, as opposed to mine, which is 3KB. If it was resized manually, then it would be a smaller file to download and the page would load faster.
I mentioned that anything over 96x96 is scaled down. P: But having it resized by RomU automatically and having it resized in Photoshop manually will give it an entirely different look regarding quality. For example: Usoppu's avatar: RomU's resize: || Photoshop resize: That's really the only reason I bothered to mention it, I didn't even think about Loony's reasoning. X: But you can definitely see a difference in quality- it probably doesn't matter to most people, but it does to me.. (;
Yeah it is a bit hefty, that's why I asked to have someone resize it for me some time ago. Oh well, I'll just revert to my old Simpsonizeme.com produced one for the time being. EDIT: Uh, nevermind I opted to use my Magician from Flyff instead. Way smaller file size now
Thanks Ussopu, but I guess I'll stay clear of the animated ones for now it's less constricting for people with low internet speeds. As for quality, hey what you did there's quite good if you ask me. Just keep it on this thread for safe keeping, I might revert back to the dark side when the need arises
Erm, my current avatar is bigger then, it's 12+ kb, but I kinda like it, I'll just stick with it for awhile
I think I set Photobucket to save it using the wrong size or the compression sucked. It was originally 20+kb but only got reduced to 126kb.
