    They give you recipes. That is explained in game when you find your first tablet (or what are they called... Metalize or something like that).

    I think you code scan it so that you will know the recipe in order to make the weapon specified by it.

    After that you can make new Item by using the specific ingredients.
    And you can make a modification to make it better. :)
