Asummed "Red Ring of Death"

    My 360 recently decided to kick the bucket while I was playing Fable, freezing randomly and after less play time with every attempted use. Now, the system won't start, flashing a steady red light where the green controller lights normally show up on the front of the system.

    My question is; is this that "Red Ring of Death" thing, and, if so, how do I go about fixing my system? I heard that Microsoft will now replace the systems free of charge, but I'm not sure if that is correct or not, and can't really look all that into it at the moment. If someone could help me, I'd be very greatful to have something to do for the next two weeks :-[

    Sorry to hear that 9NineBreaker9 but yes as you stated the will replace it, How many of the 4 "sections" are red?

    All four sections flash red, so, yeah, I guess I do have the Red Ring of Death. Looks like I'm going to have to check into sending it in...

    Usually RRoD is 3 sections,4 red sections is only a small problem compared to the real RRoD, 4 sections means it has a problem detecting your AV cable, or the AV cable is loose, ive had this problem before and removing and replacing the AV leads a few times fixed it for me. Heres the guide I followed:

    1. Make sure that the AV cable is correctly connected to the Xbox 360 console.
    2. Disconnect the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console.
    3. If the four flashing red lights continue to flash, try wiping the metal area of the AV pack with a dry cloth. The metal area is the end that plugs into the console. Wipe the metal area thoroughly, and then try the AV Pack again.
    4. If the AV cable is correctly connected but the four red lights are still flashing, substitute a different AV cable if you have one available.

    This really is nothing to worry about and can be a pretty cheap fix if it is the cable. if you get 3 red lights (section 1,2 and 3) then you can panic :p

    Hop I helped :)

    Good news and bad news! Good news it, it's not an A/V issue!

    Bad news is, I couldn't tell that the third of four sections is not lit, meaning that three sections are red, and the upper right section (while the system is lying on the floor) is not lit, making it definately less light than the other three sections. Though it's still hard to tell if that really is the case, but I'm pretty sure that three sections are red and that I do have the RRoD T_T

    YAY! RRoD! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    Now - how do I go about fixing this XD If I remember correctly, Microsoft will replace your system, free of charge, because it's such an issue, but I don't really know exactly how I do send it in. I'm going to my local game store where I bought the system soon, so should I just inquire there?

    And thanks for the help Almo - now I know that I'm royally screwed, and not just screwed! Graci =])

    I believe that there's a number that you call and Microsoft will send you a box to send in your 360 so you don't have to pay postage, and then they will fix it and send it back to you. It happened to my friend, but then he also go another month of Live free, so hopefully that's something to look forward to.

    MS should replace it if its still under warranty, though MS can take a friggin long time getting your beloved machine back to you.
    try this, and if that doesnt work then theres a 'towel' trick you can do???

    THINGS TO TRY

    1. Try restarting the console.
    2. If restarting the console does not resolve the behavior, follow these steps:
    * Turn the console off.
    * Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
    * Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
    * Firmly reconnect all the cables.
    * Turn on the console.
    3. If these steps do not resolve the behavior, turn the console off, remove the hard drive, and then turn on the console. If the 3x Red LED error light is no longer displayed, turn the console off, re-attach the hard drive, and then turn on the console.
    4. Also examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red.

    Also check your error code

    The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code

    * Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
    * Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
    * The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
    * Release the eject button and press it again.
    * The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
    * Release the eject button and press it again.
    * The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
    * Release the eject button and press it again.
    * The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
    * Release the eject button and press it again.
    * The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

    You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

    Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

    * All four lights flashing - 0
    * One light flashing - 1
    * Two Lights flashing - 2
    * Three lights flashing - 3

    I have the .pdf files on how to fix the RRoD problem.

    and yes they're the same ones from the facebook ads.

    I'll send it to you if your warranty isn't good anymore.

    never do the towel trick it causes more problems then it fixes and its only temporary as the minute the console heats up from playing the little red lights come back.
    the best thing is the x-clamp mod but I'd only suggest it if you are used to messing with stuff like that.
    i actually bought a red lighter insted of a working one fixed it up.

    also if you get a replacement, most people get the rrod because they put their 360 in stupid places. so remember the thing needs air so don't have it in a cupboard or on the carpet. i know its made to stand up but don't do it as the main place it sucks air from is the bottom. the best thing is a open flat space, wood preferably and a good idea is to put it on raisers as the ram sits on the bottom of the mother board so raisers just help a little bit.

    or on the other hand just mod the hell out of it https://www.romulation.org/forum/index.php/topic,7930.0.html

    Wow, everyone, thanks for your help, especially Almo for all of that info. I'll make sure to test everything out as soon as I can, as well as look into exactly how to go about sending it in or possibly repairing it, as I think I bought the thing one and a half to two years ago.

    Thanks again for all the help~!
