Well, if you can do local wireless, you could try Children of Mana. It's got exactly what you're asking for.
Pokemon. If you wanna TRULY beat the game, you have no choice but to collaborate with friends. I've got a few Internet friend codes if you need them.
I found the Single Player fun and varied, but the multiplayer repetitive, useless, and something that shouldn't have been implemented at all.
That ain't no RPG. All you do is trade things over and over until you turn into KK Slider or Tom Nook.
