For the past few days my antivirus (AVG) has been unable to update and i haven't been able to connect to the avg site either. I have run antivirus & anti-spyware scans but they have come up with nothing. I have also noticed that i cant connect to other AV sites either.

Other things i have noticed which may be related are: 200+ outgoing connections via svchost, security center disabled (might have been me not sure), a strange exception in my windows firewall svxcgky or something like that, just realised i cant update comodo firewall or connect to any firewall sites either, anti-spyware sites are fine and am able to update as well

Also direct sound keeps disabling itself (I re-enable it through administrative tools/services start windows audio but thought i'd mention it)

Well, do you use any software firewalls? (other than Windows Firewall?) General rule of thumb is to limit yourself to one Firewall program, one AntiVirus program, and one Anti-Spyware program. They do have a tendancy to interfere with each other.

    Personally I just have:

    AVG Free 8.0
    Spybot S&D
ZoneAlarm Firewall (I don't really use it as protection, just more easily denying certain programs from using the internet)
    Disabled windows firewall.

I used to use Ad-aware as well, but Spybot recommends not using it at the same time because of inteference. It's not a bad program by any means, I just prefer Spybot instead. It could be something as simple as your firewalls blocking your attempts.

This site has a very good guide on how to completely clean your system if you think you are infected. Just follow the instructions.

    I use

    AVG 8.0
    Spybot S&D
Comodo Firewall (for more or less same reason)
    Windows firewall disabled

I have gone through all the permissions in comodo just in case but every instance of AVG is allowed internet access

Will check out the guide and get back to you

    Thanks

    XP version Please

I have found out that i have the conficker.b worm but i am lacking a way to remove it.
As i previously stated i cant connect to antivirus updates/sites and microsoft.com due to the worm and they are the only ways to remove it. I am currently trying windows live onecare online scanner (downloaded the actual program but antivirus couldnt be activated)

There is a handful of programs used to clean your computer in that link I gave you. Have you tried those? They usually are pretty good at taking out even the toughest of items. Like Super Anti Spyware and Malwarebytes anti malware.

I have solved it thanks to you and loony. I couldn't connect to any antivirus websites so i had to download Microsoft's malicious software removal tool from a 3rd party site and that seems to have done the trick
The worm was conficker.b here's the site i found info on http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20090116-conficker-worm-spikes-infects-1-1-million-pcs-in-24-hours.html
    Its a "beast" apparently

Thanks for all your help ;D
