comparing halo/call of duty to contra is like comparing casuals to hardcore. the challenge in contra is unbelievable as compared to halo or call of duty.

i liked the guys impression during the interview.

I think you are (article) wrong in one point.
Have you tried Vendetta (CoD5) in Veteran difficulty? Halo can be core ,but Activision still can make hardcore...modes ,at least.

But I believe what most killed hardcore gaming is healing-by-time.

I think the issue is that you have a multitude of difficulties, instead of just one.

Most people just pick Easy or Normal and never bother to play Hard, Extra Hard, or some other unlockable difficulty. That gives the impression that the game is easy, when it can be extremely difficult.

I actually like the healing over time idea, but obviously it's for when you are not in combat. It adds to the little bit of strategy that the game has, especially when you are limited on time. Either stay back, heal, waste some time (time you might not have) or plow right through.

    Totally agree to 2nd.
But; remember the times that you had 1 hp and you were looking for health pick-ups. That really added tension to teh game. Play resistance 1 than 2. You will get it.

It would be better if the AI would rush you if they find you just staying back. In The Conduit, the AI sometimes waits for you to approach them, meaning that I could go make a sandwich and come back and nothing would have happened.

Conduit is not hardcore. Try GeoW or CoD at Veteran.

And Wii has a limited disk space. Conduit ,even now ,is a miracle.

the hardcore scene died a long time ago, when the idiots chose FFVII over FFVI.

Dificulty on a RPG ._. ? But yeh I kinda agree with you there.

    @Topic

insane pointed out pretty well the difficulty option.

Most peaple doesnt play at higher dificulties. And when they play, they already have a great notion of what they are doing since they already saw everything in the lower ones.

Is like playing a FPS game and there is scene where a enemy jumps out of nowhere from a wall. At lower dificulties he wont kill you instantely, but even if you play the game in hard ones you already know that there was one there.

Also "hard mode" on most games are just enemys with more health that deals more damage. I realy dont see the fun playing on hard with that.

I miss games with intelligent dificulties. Not just a power-up in the enemys.

    I never said it was...
It sure is frustrating though, having enemies respawn constantly.
Notice that you said a certain difficulty. That pretty much proves my point. COD is easy on greenhorn (OBVIOUSLY) but harder on Veteran. The hardcore part isn't gone, it's just not mandatory like it used to be.
I don't get your point. What does limited disk space have to do with anything? Everything can be run off of the disc.

i think the reason why zangief keeps mentions this is because the change from final fantasy 6 to final fantasy 7 is drastic, that is it went from 2d to 3d. to him, this is a turning point where the game is no longer in development for the purpose of creativity and all those other stuff one can find in the old games from the 8bit to 16bit days. to him, this means games have become shallow as developers are more focused on technology value [that is the graphics, sound, etc....].

the wii will never run out of disc space as like the 360/ps3. how come? because the wii is running games in 480i/480p. metroid prime trilogy is a lot of gaming time, 3 full games on a single disc. i don't understand how a game developer is able to take so much space and still don't have enough and a company like nintendo is able to use such confine space wisely.

MP 1 and 2 are GC discs. 1.35 GB apiece. MP3 (I think) is 4.7 GB.
This EASILY fits onto a 8.5 GB DL DVD.
You could say that they utilize space efficiently, or not effective enough.
If I'm going to spend $50 on a game (which I'm not...) then I'd expect it to fill the entire 8.5 GB to the point where the company has to actually cut a few things to make it fit.

I don't mean to offend anybody, but it's the cold, hard truth.

After FF7 started to become a global phenomenon (which should not have been a bad thing, but for some reason, it did), all the other publishers started to make games that are more on the graphical side than on the gameplay side, and that's when the hardcore scene died IMO.

People no longer cared if the game offers the challenge or not, as long as they see some beautiful cinematics.

Contra, hardcore? Puh-leaze. All you have to do is memorise enemy patterns and have good reflexes.

precisely, you memorize everything to make things easy.

games today, well, you just roam around and hack/shoot stuff.
