I am desperately looking for an instant messenger that allows me to import my contacts from my hotmail account. I've tried Trillian but somehow my contacts do not show up. If anyone knows how to fix this or knows any such messenger, pleeeeaaasseeee~~~ tell me. Thanks a lot in advance.

P.S.-the reason I'm looking for a new messenger is because window lives messenger has been shittin on me >< I sign in and a few seconds later I'm disconnected and I've tried everything on the internet but I still can't fix it so I'm looking for a new messenger T.T

Thanks for the quick reply but Pidgin requires GTK+ which is being painfully slow to download -.- so in the meantime I welcome any other suggestions. Thanks.

Pidgin really is the premiere multi-protocol instant messenger, and the GTK+ libs can't be that huge. I just checked my package manager, and libgtk2-0 is only about 6mb uncompressed, so the windows version shouldn't be all that much larger. You really should give it a try.

If you're only interested in the WLM protocol, then I guess you could use emesene (http://emesene.org/index.html).

I believe gtk is included with pidgin anyway.

The installation automatically downloads GTK but those stuffs usually fail epic-ly with my internet connection. I've downloaded GTK manually but Pidgin won't start, it says erm..."entry point g_asserion_message_expr could not be located in the dynamic link library libglib-2.0-0.dll.". Am I putting GTK in the wrong place? o_O

Nevermind. I fixed it. Just had to copy GTK into the Pidgin folder =P

Okay, now I got a new problem ==" my Pidgin won't sign in. It just says connecting and errrr that's all it does...help please ><
It's fixed again. Haha, sorry for the trouble =P

OK, seriously, I need help...I just wanna chat to my MSN contacts on my laptop. That's all I need. MSN is being a bitch to me. I even went and tried creating a new account which seems to fix the problem until I added my 20th contact(could be a coincidence though) and poof, the problem returned. Pidgin is impossible to sign into -.- Trillian won't show my contacts. Emesene has the same problem as windows live messenger. Hope someone can respond to me ASAP >< Any help is greatly appreaciated.

Hm... why not use a Web IM? There is IMO... and one my brother uses which I cannot remember name.

And Btw, it's not your Windows Live messenger, it's your IP adress. Used to happen to me like hundreds of times when I updated. Run troubleshooting, it might help. I'm on Dial Up and it works fine right now. Even when I'm downloading files at 5KBPS, it still stays connected.

irrelevant as far as I know, the only free support is windows update related or their community forums.

That was in the pass though it is possible that it could be my internet but this time around, I don't think so. + erm, the thing is, I CAN sign in, I just disconnect almost immediately though the stupid MSN takes a few minutes to realize it. So, erm, to the MSN, there is nothing to troubleshoot.
Another reason why I'm pretty sure it isn't related to my internet. The forums do have incidents with the same problem. Thing is, I've tried every single possible solution and it still won't work. Another thing I noticed which might help is that twice, MSN works fine around midnight(including last night after 11) but kinda defeats the purpose of MSN to only be able to sign when most people are asleep -.- it still might be my internet though but......I don't know anymore...sighs

But thanks, especially to Loonylion, for your time and help ^^ just goes to proof Romulations is more than just DS downloads xD

are you on mobile broadband or some other slow connection?
mine does things like that at peak times, come midnight i can do anything, xbox live games, mmorpg etc but at teatime i cant do a thing, not even facebook poker

Hmm, that actually might explain it...I'm using a broadband mobile modem(a multi-purpose device which let's you use it as modem, mobile, mp3 and USB) and erm, let's just say my country has one of the shittiest internet I ever -.- I am grateful that I have internet, it's just that, there's no reason why my country's internet isn't as good as some other countries and to make things worse, it's more expensive than other countries -.-
I DO hope this isn't permanent but it's just so sudden(started last friday/saturday), that's about 5-6 days already and it's really, REALLY frustrating...I do think the main problem with my internet is that it's not consistent and constant. The speed fluctuates tremendously and I think it cuts off every once in a while which results in me constantly mashing the refresh button =="

that could explain it. ive never had messenger problems when using mobile broadband, although it depends on a number of variables such as how good your modem is, how good the signal is, how many people are on the same cell, how good your provider's backhaul network is and a number of other things.

equally it could be MSN itself, its not always easy to determine the root cause.

I never had problems with older versions with MSN. And then they JUST had to force us to use the new version of MSN >< since I 've updated my MSN, I had to re-install then reformat my hard drive for the new MSN to work. Then my MSN won't reconnect by itself when disconnected though I could live with that. Then this -.- not to mention how slow hotmail.com is to me. And the thing that pisses me off the most is that you actually do sign in and when only1 or 2 contacts online I go WTF man!!!

P.S.-sorry if kinda turned this into a complaining thread ><

I stopped using MSN because it never showed my contacts list. I use pidgin instead now.

So far IMO seems to be working for me but it kinda takes up quite a few more bytes than messengers since it's a web messenger. My Pidgin doesn't seem to work properly. It takes forever to sign in(if it even does). When I try to connect to my MSN it shows the loading circle thingy which doesn't moves and the word connecting. And something a bit annoying about Pidgin, though I may be able to live with it, is that sometimes it says your message may not have been sent due to connection timeout and the person I'm chattin with receives all those messages at once. Does that happen with your Pidgin?

Pidgin does take quite a long time to sign in. the timeouts could be MSN or could be high latency on your connection.

Erm, I'm using windows and do I need to do anything before using Pidgin? Or is GTK all I need? Because there's a pretty lengthy xplanation about using Pidgin on windows which I don't quite understand...am I doing something wrong?
