Ive just bought an Acer AOD250-OBK netbook for my son to play in his room. The problem is that there is hot-air blowing out of the left side, which is where the processor is located. The area around that vent also gets quite hot.
A mate told me that the Atom Processors are known to run quite hot,but the laptop isnt going to be much use if you cant sit it on your lap,or lay it on your bed etc.I only had it on for 15 minutes in idle and it was like a mini hair dryer.

Has anyone on here got one and gets the same problem....

absolutely! my netbook i'm using, acer aspire one netbook, is like heating up and there is a bit of a problem like i opted to have it on standby when i close it but the problem is, it gets black like its on standby but its still running, you will know if its on standby if the power led is like yellow, and if its on/running its color is green.

I was going to buy that type,it was £200 in Comet, but I went for the slightly bigger one for £230-it looked better.I will trim XP right back to the bare bones hoping it will decrease the heat.

Im pretty sure you couldnt let it touch your bare leg for a minute, which would make their products not fit for purpose.Either that or they should issue a health warning like they do with other stuff...

yup, they should fix that, but i'm thinking it does have a fan but due to its size, its tinny sized fan that is useless and just add to the heat inside.

well, acer is known to be cheap, maybe a bit of sacrifice is needed for its price.

Acers are known to have poor thermal design, I have an acer gaming laptop. The graphics chip is not cooled at all and the hard disk is inadequately cooled. I run mine with the hard disk cover off and I also use a notebook cooler.

I think I will have to take it back.I wanted something small but didnt want to pay too much as that heads into the 15" laptop category. It was only going to be used for watching you-tube,but its no use if you cant put it on your lap,or have to use a tea-tray.

you mean your opening your laptop just to play/use it? so that the notebook cooler will reach the harddrive? or you are using an external one?

unless that notebook cooler cools like an airconditioner in the sahara, its useless in a acer. why cant they make a notebook cooler that really cools off the notebook? if the air around you is hot, the air from the cooler is also hot. ergo, the air that is supposed to cool the notebook is definitely making it hotter.

Im actually going to test it tonight.I will rest it on my bare leg and see how long I can endure the heat for. Then I'll put a thermometer beside the vent and take a reading.
If Im not happy,I'll go for a refund.I suppose the wife could use it as a stand-in hair dryer and I could use it as a paint stripper.

No, there is a removable panel in the bottom that covers the hard drive, I run it with that cover off. The notebook cooler is basically a unit with two fans in that the notebook rests on.

So that is the purpose of that panel! now i get it. hahaha, i thought it was a storage for something. I once had the ram upgraded from 1g to 1.5g..yeah, it can only handle 1.5g.

well, the technician opened the panel thinking its covering the ram, but he just found it like a compartment of some sort. well, you need to open it up, meaning removing all the screws, just to fix the ram... one of the things i hate with this netbook.

To fix Ram into this thing, you need to take it to bits to access the empty bank.

Acer laptops are not known for handling heat well. From what I've dealt with, it's a pretty common issue.

mine gets quite toasty, but i don't mind. mine only gets hot if it is on my lap, but if it is on a table, like it is now, it doesn't get too hot....just depends on where you put it.

Dont put it on your lap-according to Euro-Acer its not designed for that.Only Laptops are meant for your lap.
So Netbooks and Notebooks should be put on something flat so air can circulate all round according to them.

For me,thats about 60% of its functionality down the toilet

Ill modify it later, its still in the box.I just think its a bit sneaky of Acer not warning people about the heat-and no mention of this in any reviews I read before I bought it.

it is annoying.......though i'm not gonna complain about buying it for $100 (USD)!!

i got it from a friend and it runs just great with linux except for the heat.........if i did buy it new, i would complain then.

I have this problem also with my Acer netbook..can you tell me what type of cooling devices you use ? I am considering a blue freezer pac like you pack in coolers, and wrap with a thin towel for under it..I used that many yrs ago with an old laptop...thanks

its a flat pad with two fans in it, designed for cooling laptops. the fans are usb powered.
