i reinstalled windows xp over an old windows xp because the old one had a missing file and i couldn't find and didn't bother to deal with the problem so i just reinstalled over the old one and just reinstall the programs and such.

the problem is when i go back to documents and settings on the c: drive and try to get the old stuff from my desktop, i get a pop-up that says access is denied. is there a way to do something to get those files on my desktop from the old windows install?? also, the hard drive is 160 gb and when you select it, it would list 30gb free out of 160gb, which would suggest that the old files still exists or at least that's what i think.

please post your solutions and any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

yes, you need to log in as administrator and give your new account permission to access the old folders.

how do you do that and i never had to do that back then. i also tried several reinstalls again using different names and such and i can access those from the documents and setting in the c: drive but i just can't access that one folder in the documents and setting.

i reinstalled again twice [named it a and b] and could have then accessed, however folder z [the one that gives me the access denied pop-up] is not openable.

at the welcome screen hit ctrl + alt + del (might have to do it twice) and you'll get a login screen. change the username to 'administrator' and log in using the administrator password you set during install. navigate to where the folder is and right click it, go to 'properties' then 'security' and set 'full control' to allowed for 'everyone'

i'm glad i was able to get those files and am transferring them to a newer hard drive. this 160gb hard drive is in great need of a new fresh install.

so it was basically an owership right. but that never happened before until now. anyway i hope this helps people who may have encountered the problem. btw, thank god for the internet.
